Hello, I'm new to the forum and have yet to introduce myself, so I'll let this serve as my introduction.
My name is Jason, I'm 36 and I was diagnosed type 2 at age 13 while weighing 330 lbs. Type 1 runs so thick on my dad's side, that I am very likely both, now.
My numbers have been much better in the last year, since switching to a vegetarian diet and I'm hoping that going vegan will improve it, further.
Last week, My Humulin R just would not seem to lower my blood sugar, so, I had to practically double my dosage to get it to lower. Basically, this means going from around 30/40 units, daily to 60/70 units.
So, I ran out. I can't afford 100 bucks a bottle, out of pocket, so I had to wait a couple extra days before my insurance would pay, again.
Now, I know I shouldn't have, but this is what I did... I upped my dose of Lantus for a few days. I typically take 50-70 at bed time, depending on that morning's numbers. So, I jumped it up to 120 units. Things went alright for most of the day, I took my metformin, like usual. I did eat a little lighter, but not much. My midafternoon numbers, were in the mid 200's(12-15).
Flash forward a few hours, only down to around 170(9.4) and my girlfriend is home, we're about to go shopping. We leave, gone for a couple hours, come home, my blood sugar is 105(6). Not bad, not bad.... I go to check the mail, maybe 50 yards at most. Almost back and I feel sweaty, it's hard to walk.
I come in, check again, blood sugar is 50 and I'm feeling faint. I eat a candy bar. A few minutes later, I check, it's 35(2). I can barely see the monitor, at this point. I'm sweating, profusely, dizzy, etc.
I ended up going to the hospital, since it seemed to not want to go up. By the time I got there, it was 156(8.6). Later to raise to about 300 (166).
I guess, what I'm looking for, is answers as to why my sugars would stay so high, while using my R and lantus, but get to 35 with lantus, alone.
The Dr. at the ER, gave me something about "insulins reacting differently, etc." As far as I can tell, there's no reason for lantus to ever drop me that low.
