FreeStyle libre and managing BGL on a night out with alcohol and dancing...

Scan a lot and keep hypo treatments on hand.
Eat something substantial before bed because the alcohol can make you drop during the night.

Thanks for your reply.
Roughly how often would you scan? Every 10 minutes, every 30 minutes.....?
When you say eat something substantial before bed can you give me an example of what to have and also would you inject for it?

Hi @mum2westiesGill ,

I'll be honest with you. This is where a CGM set up comes in handy?

Alcohol & the "contortion act" of scanning may not be a good combination regarding the possibility of your phone hitting the dancefloor..
Most of my nights out are at rock concerts? I've seen phones smashed & lost by the presumably inebriated. Usually held aloft taking photos or videoing a performing band.. Then loosing a pocket.

My personal threshold of snack before bed with longer acting carbs if I hadn't eaten with alcahol already would be somewhere in the region of 10 or 15gs

The issue with alcohol is it keeps the liver busy so any potential BG drops can be a bit sharp? Booze can retard a liver dump.
Personally, I would not have any working short acting insulin onboard as an MDI'er whilst "on the lash?

Having said that. Even on the basal I use, I can be habitually more insulin sensitive in the evenings.
Unfortunatly, we all tend to have our own personal rate at which we burn energy strutting our stuff at the "disco?"

This will be your "science experiment" spotting your trends. Scan as much as you feel comfortable with.
Maybe if you have a sensible friend who can keep an eye on you & give a gentle nudge to scan, whilst you get used to this? The better.

Have fun. :)

Depends why you are scanning and what are you going to do with the result?
If you will not do anything unless you are hypo, there is no point scanning too often.

It's probably best to set yourself a limit say of 6mmol/l as BG levels can drop quickly when dancing, and if you test and are below then take on carbs or hypo treatment if close to 4, i'd rather end the night high than low as a low whilst under the influence is dangerous, also remember that being low and drunk are easily confused too so others might think you are just drunk but you could in fact be low so also good to have a trustworthy pal around who knows how to check and what you need to take.

Being type 1 has never stopped me having a good night though, just needs a little more attention to manage tho.

In my many years of drinking ( not any more hate the hangovers ), and through much trial and ERRORi came to the conclusion that when out on “ the lash “ I took no insulin to compensate for booze , if I was having a meal my bonus would be less than normal cos I knew my bs wold drop like a stone down a well normally when sleeping, it served me well , sometimes my sugars were elevated for a while but wasn’t a problem for the time involved.
