Freestyle Libre - Quick Question

Hi guys! I hope I'm not asking something that has already been covered a few times over but just wondered how reliable the 'average glucose' is on the freestyle in terms of giving an indication as to hba1c? I would usually work this out via my Accu Chek meter which runs alongside my pump and to be fair the average is exactly the same on both but I wondered, as the libre is monitoring glucose over 8 hour periods, would it be more reliable (if the readings aren't too far out from meter readings)? Thanks in advance!
 
I usually find that the Libre predicts my HbA1c to be 0.2 or 0.3 (%) less than my hospital HbA1c tests
 
Interesting, thank you!! I have only started using it this week so haven't used the software yet, I'm just going off the 'average glucose' figure for now but have found it really helpful for overnight!! It's a great piece of technology although maybe I won't be saying that when I change the sensor and things aren't quite as accurate :rolleyes:

I've been using it 2 years and find the sensors pretty accurate. If you want to check your HbA1c prediction in the software, remember to set the time period as 3 months.
 
Good point, I don't think I would have even thought to do that!! I've found my first sensor to be pretty accurate so far. Had a few that were a bit out but could have been food still digesting or IOB. I do wonder though if I get a reading that is, say, 1.5 higher (only happened me once or twice) than meter does this mean that the higher reading is correct and meter just hasn't caught it as its capturing your reading at a point in time where libre monitors it over a period of time? I know libre measures the fluid which is 10mins or so behind but has BS hit the higher peak and meter just hasn't picked up on this due to timings around when you check or would this be more an inaccuracy on the odd occasion. Sorry if that ramble doesn't make much sense!!
 
The Libre system has a predictive algorithm which doesn't always guess right, but it gives you a fairly good idea of what's going on.

My Libre predicted my HbA1c to be 0.4 lower than it actually was. I was surprised how far out it was. But then the sensors do vary quite a bit, and I guess (and it is a guess) that either the Libre under scores a bit, or our individual rate of glycation messes up the calculation.

Hi!! Thanks for your reply!! My next appt isn't until October but I'll be interested to see how it fares. Glycation rates is a fair point actually. Love all the knowledge on here :)
