Hey guys
So as y'all probably already know the freestyle libre is coming to the NHS (UK) in November!!
I'm super excited and so happy as it made my life so much better when I was given a free trial by my doctor!
I'm curious as to whether anyone has any idea about how I go about getting a prescription for it? I'd imagine my GP will be able to answer my questions once its available but if anyone knows how I can get the ball rolling beforehand that'd be great!

No one knows yet as no one has yet approved it.
 
If no one has approved it why is it being marketed as available in November? Surely someone has to back it before it can be rolled out?
 
Libre's maker, Abbott, over-egged the pudding with their announcement that it was now available on the NHS. It's been generally approved at a national level for prescription, but it's still up to each individual health area to decide the terms on which they'll ok doctors prescribing it.

I contacted my ccg about this. The libre is approved for use but it has not been added to the prescription system and the drug tariff itself has not been approved.
I believe the next step is for ccg’s to hold a committee to discuss the tariff so it may yet be a while before anyone gets this on the nhs. I guess it will be the same as applying for funding like they currently do with cgm! ☹️☹️☹️

There is a holding statement on the CCGs’ formulary about Freestyle Libre http://www.chmsformulary.nhs.uk/default.asp :

“Flash Glucose Meters - Crawley CCG and Horsham and Mid-Sussex CCGs (CHMS CCGs) Local decision: Interim Guidance- At present FreeStyle Libre sensors are not available to prescribe by GPs on FP10. There is currently an application in progress to have these added to the Drug Tariff. The CHMS CCGs clinical leads and the Head of Medicines Management have agreed that until the Prescribing Clinical Network (PCN)/Brighton Area Prescribing Committee (APC) have evaluated this product it would be considered locally as BLACK on the traffic light system and should not be prescribed in primary care (should it become available on FP 10) or secondary care”

This is similar to the position in surrounding CCGs. For your information, FP10 is a classification for prescription.

The PCN and Brighton APC are committees the CCGs use to evaluate new products, determine their place in therapy and make recommendations about formulary inclusion.

As you rightly say Freestyle Libre becomes available to prescribe on NHS prescription from 1 November 2017. The APC and PCN have received applications from local secondary (hospital) care consultants for FreeStyle libre to be considered and both committees will be looking at this product within the next few weeks. They will make recommendations to the CCGs so there is likely to be a decision in the very near future for both primary (GP) and secondary care.
 
I'm type 2, self-controlled by diet, but I like to check my dietary response fairly frequently. Last year I was in Southern Ireland and had forgotten to take my meter with me, so went into a pharmacy to buy a new one.
I was actually GIVEN a Freestylet Libre, together with 20 strips for free, even though I explained I was from UK
It would seem that the RoI is much more generous than the UK when it comes to these things.
