Hi, have you tried posting in the Type 2s on insulin forum?

Is your DSN aware of the severe hypos?

Is there any pattern to when they are happening - if it's 2 or 3 hours after eating & your bolus that suggests you ratio needs adjusting down. If they are more random, it could be your basal dose is too high.

If you are not hypo aware and you are having frequent severe unconscious hypos, the advice is to try to run higher (ie stay over 6) and test frequently.

I would also look into a CGM that keeps a constant eye on your blood sugar and alarms if you are dropping low- they are expensive though.

I would be contacting my health care team. Irrelevant of how you're treating the symptoms, it's not working. You need an assessment of your current health problems.

Hypos are dangerous, you need to sort it out!

Hi @sheff

I've moved this thread for you

The blacking out sounds serious - definitely speak to your team about that. It could be that your insulin doses need adjusting if you're going too low.

Do you count carbs in your meals and adjust your bolus insulin dose accordingly?

thank you for your reply they just keep changing what type of insulin i take just started on basal hypos can happen at any time day or night my levels can drop from 9 to under 3 with out warning getting sick of them

@sheff Sorry you are experiencing this. I would agree with the posts above - you need to speak with your DSN to discuss the black outs and consider how to avoid them - it sounds like you need to chat about adjusting your basal down.

Do you drive?

@sheff - I'm sorry you're having a hard time with hypos. I'm also on a basal and bolus MDI treatment.

Just a couple of things:
1) The basal dosage may need tweaking.
2) The type of basal insulin you are using could be the wrong profile for you. They all have different profiles and it may be the one you're on is not suitable. I was initially on protophane and that wasn't suitable, so I was switched over to lantus.
3) You may be using too much bolus dosage for what you're eating and doing (you have to factor in your activity too... I take less if I know I'm going to be going shopping for example).

I hope you're able to get this figured out with your docs as it is dangerous especially when you say you have no warning signs.

I wish you the best
