Today is the longest day. Gardeners World is on the TV, with beautiful flowers and plants,it's bright and sunny outside. I have the window open and I can hear the birds chirping away and I can see a few sparrows pecking at the Honeysuckle on the trellis, it couldn't get much better than this, aahhh :D

Aye, living in a large city there's nothing warms the cockles like the hacking coughs of the sparrows and the chesty wheezing of the pigeons.

sparkyrich, sounds as though your birdies could do with a nice holiday in the countryside  It would do them the world of good, with all that fresh air it would help with clearing out their little lungs. I live in a town and we seem to be getting more Gulls!!

Best wishes RRB

Love the birds in the garden. Got all sorts, including heron and assorted sea birds. Got the odd stray pheasant and grouse too. Dad thinks they're out to get his car though. :)

I must admit to being a bit weird. I HATE the summer. I hate the sun. I hate the long days. Roll on October!! :)

hornblower, wow what I would give to have those types of birds visit my garden, it sounds just wonderful.:D

I have to agree with you, I love the Autumn too, it's my favourite season. Yesterday it what just a simple thing that made me want to write this thread, also I do agree that the days do seem very, very long, especially lots of light at 5am !!!!!!!!!! I do get out and about I need the sun for the Vitamin D to help my bones.

The days, as I speak, will be getting shorter from now on, so happy days for you. :D

Best wishes RRB

Happy days indeed!! :)

- my gold fish aren't impressed with the heron!

We have one of your namesakes RRB, a pair of wrens live in amongst the pots, owls, (and a pair of mad bats!) the most incredible gold finches ( - I had to look them up, I couldn't believe I was seeing a polka dot bird!!) and just about everything else you can think of. We are lucky, but it can get awful noisy!

- we get lots of wild ponies and sheep too!

Arrrrrh it's really good to have these threads for a chat...
Think October is with us today though......
Lots of rooks live on our garden.....they put the bread in the birdbath to make it soft really soft ......have a robin to loves grated cheese..very tame :)

Until a few years ago, I had a beautiful golden retriever named Ben. We used to leave the back door open so that he could wander in and out whenever he liked. He was a little under weight and not much interested in eating, so, in an effort to get him to eat more, there was always dry food in his bowl in the kitchen.
He wasn't that interested, but the black birds were! They used to hop in through the back door, through the utility room and into the kitchen. If Ben was there, he'd move over to let them share, then they'd hop off again!
I miss having a dog. SO much. I get custody of my brothers dog when he's away, but I miss having my own. I work stupid hours now, so it wouldn't be fair. :(

Sorry to hear abt Ben it's sad to loose a pet.....soooo many dogs in need (and cats) but sad if they catch birds etc...
Shame there is no way of getting a dog....are you watching Paul o Grady at batter sea breaks your heart

Can't watch stuff like that. We've had several rescue dogs. - my dad is known for being brilliant with animals. Especially the ones who got bigger than their owners thought they would. At one point we had 5 dogs. Ben, 2 rotties who thought they were babies, a black lab who'd been abandoned and a gentleman Doberman who'd been chucked out of a moving vehicle. We lost all 5 within 4 years to either cancer or old age. Neither of us want to go there again for a while, even if we could.

I used to be like that when I lived in Hertfordshire. When it started to snow I would stand with my head tilted back and my eyes closed feeling the snow flakes landing on my face. Now I am old and decrepit and living in Cornwall I think the gentle summers are kinder than a gentle winter. My friend has much wildlife visiting her garden. The badgers dig many holes in the lawn, she don't mind. The moles leave some hills here and there, that's all right. A horse got in the garden on Christmas day and destroyed the lawn. All this wildlife including birds, mice and voles (some sort of small furry thing anyway) all pay a visit. When we pick runner beans (not yet but getting closer) there are bees buzzing round telling us which bean to pick, we get on very well with bees and we planted a large area of wild flowers at the front of the house. My friend now finds it difficult to get out of her drive. When we go for walks we stroke cats whenever we see one. If you are ever in Cornwall RRB, pop in for a cuppa and a chat. The views from my friends garden are lovely. Hundreds of acres of farmland (not hers!) with a sprinkling of derelict engine houses.

- can't believe your beans are close! Ours aren't even flowering yet! Although we do have green tomatoes and have been picking cucumbers for a couple of weeks. :)

( thanks for changing the subject. I wasn't looking forward to my dad coming home and wondering why I was crying!)

It's lovely to see bees in the garden isn't it? Especially when you hear they're in trouble. I make sure to plant lots of bee friendly stuff.

I didn't know Robins like grated cheese, I have some in the fridge, so I will start to put some out tomorrow ( I don't mind sharing my beloved cheese with the birds :D)
