Hi Friends

i was wondering when diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, what happens from going from diet only to meds ro insulin?

i am on diet and excersice only, but was just wondering if it is to do with not getting your numbers inder control?
thanx xxxx

My father has run the gamut from diet only to insulin. It's taken 20+ years and his is mainly because he has never taken much responsibility for his numbers.

Cheers

I started off being told i was prediabetic and on diet only. Then i was told i had type 2 and i was put on Metformin which i couldn't tolerate. I lost weight and had fairly good control. Then in December i was hospitalised with DKA and pneumonia after being treated for those i was put on Gliclazide but my numbers are still high so i'm going onto insulin on Monday. I have been told maybe i was never a type 2 but prehaps have MOBY or LADA.

You'll probably move on to metformin when diet and exercise is not enough. I taken 10 years to max my 3 types of tablet and have to go on insulin.

My dad was on diet only for 10 years - really has always had good control and taken care of himself - (he low carbed even 20 odd years ago) - caught a nasty virus and then had an emergency op for a twisted bowel - was on insulin within 6 months - he has been on insulin now for about 11 yrs - still no complications - being on insulin isn't always because you have self inflicted bad control -sometimes thing are just out of your control :(

thanx for you all your replies, i was just wondering what determined when you went onto insulin, i guess its when nothing else works?

my first hba1c was 7%...due another next month, so i guess its when the numbers keep going up that they consider insulin?

thanx xx

For me I was put on insulin when I was on 2000mg metformin, 320mg Gliclazide and 45mg Piaglitazone with a HBA1C of 19.8.

Hiya, roxy how are you doing? I actually asked this questions when they put me on januvia [sitaglyptin] . . . And was told, 1st diet n excercise combo if BS remain high start on metformin if that dosent work try other tablet type n form meds, if they fail to reduce your BS high levels then try januvia GLP4 if that fails then try the peptides byetta or victoza then insulin.... I myself was taken down this pathway n route. Still on the victoza with levemir insulin n little effect on lowered BS levels. See a new DSN on july6th. Probably increase the insulin. Hope this helps you roxy. How are you doing? Anna.x :)

Hi Anna, i;m not too bad thanx, still tired most days, how are you?

Hiya roxy, am okay dokay just ploddin along as you do.. BS still ruddy high n am well past panicking about it now. Its felt like trying to ram a square peg into a round hole! Like you am without sufficient energy to do a lot. What meds are you on ? nothing ? just diet n excersise only ? Anna.x

just diet for me anna,

its horrible when your feel tired all the time, but i do have good days, going swimming later :)

Hiya roxy, swimming is a great stress buster eh? you will feel great afterwards and probably sleep well tonite! Doc says once I get my high BS under control all my tiredness n blurry eye focus should improve. Some days hard to believe that this will ever happen . Enjoy your swim do you world of good. lol Anna.x
