How can i hlp my dad, and what can i say and Is it something to be worried about??????????????




Im very new to this.

I dont know whether this is how you start a forum or thread! But hay ho.

My dad had metformin for 3 years ( i thinks thats type 2 ) but last year he had to go onto insulin. However very low. he is on lactos solo star in the morning and maybe the evening i dont know and humalog quikpen through out the day.
I am worried he is getting to stressed. He is a smoker about 20 - 35 a day. depending. He has just had a job change which is now more labouring. he drives deliverys for a construction company in a lorry. He is a bit of a stress head, he is always trying to give me ( 11 yr old ) and my 5 yr old sister the best we can. we are not rich and not poor we are working class.

I want to know what i can do. a doctor said he may have a rare type of diabetes which they have only just been able to research. this dawned on me a bit earlier when we were talking and he said the doctor, not a nurse said he could have 30 yrs to live or 10 or 1 yr. this kind of got me scared and worried.

Lately i have been worried about death so this effected me a bit more and its on my mind. I have asked him to quit smoking as i know he can do it as he done it before and he said he might. However his other part of his head says no as it calms him down.

So basically: ............ .................... ................


How can i hlp him and what can i say and Is it something to be worried about??????????????

Well done for finding this forum, you are a great kid, try not to worry about your dad too much, sometimes medical people say things to us to try and frighten us a little bit, to make us do things like giving up smoking, as you know smoking isnt great but sometimes its hard to stop, have you spoken to your dad about your worries? im sure he will be fine, see if you can get him to come to the forum and have a chat with us

he sounds like a really good dad, your lucky to have each other

dont worry too much honestly, things are never as bad as they sound

Well done on finding us.

Tell your Dad how you feel. You could write him a note.
Ask him to save the money from when he gives up smoking to take you and your sister on a trip.

There are variations of diabetes but the main thing is that he eats healthy, does some exercise and goes to his medical appointments.

I think he is VERY lucky to have a son like you

Hi. You've done the right thing in seeking out possible help. Giving up smoking can be so difficult for some people but keep trying to get him at least to reduce it. If your father is overweight then this can make his diabetes a bit worse. If this is true then perhaps gently encourage a better diet although as you say cost may be a problem and it's not easy as driver. Having the best diet will help as much as stopping the smoking so keep encouraging him gently on all fronts. Good luck

I wonder if Kyle can test his dad's BG levels.. that might help ease his mind... I don't want him to be worried about losing his dad.. I've got tears in my eyes. But on a more positive note... My mom has had Diabetes for almost 30 years , she is now 82 and she is still going and she's smoked a lot of that time and I suspect she's not done her entire best in controlling it. She never tested her levels, that I know of, although she did eat properly for her condition. She's suffered some of the complication of Diabetes but she is still jogging along, so to speak.

Andy, I'm glad he had the presence of mind to make some sort of contact at least (through you). He's only 11 poor lad. I'm so worried for him; 'cos I don't want him to fret. I bet he can't sleep at night.... ooooh
 
I know

I have 10 and 13 yr olds, I can't imagine them doing this, and how frightened they would have to be to do so, worrying

Typical of some Doctors. They just come right out with it, not thinking who they will be shocking or upsetting.

Kyle, focus on the 30 years that the doc mentioned, disregard the other two figures for now (although they could apply to anyone of us, ill or not) Your dad could well go further than 30 years will you to look after him.

Sometimes 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing' as the saying goes. Try to learn as much as you can about the management of D and the prevention of the complications that come with it. That's the main reason I am here, to educate myself about my risks (because I'm as worried as you are)!

He's probably a natural worrier! I hope he can get some good advice/tips from this forum. I think it helps a lot if he can get feedback from actual people and he'll feel less alone.
