Froth in urine

Just finished my 13th day on the LCHF diet, and noticed a little froth in my urine this morning, then a return to normal for the rest of the day, then late tonight, a repeat of what I observed this morning. I believe this is an indication of protein in the urine. I'm wondering if I should reduce my protein intake for a day or two, and if I should call my doctor in the morning. When I had a comprehensive metabolic panel done two weeks ago, my blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and GFR were all in the normal range. Heading to bed now. Appreciate hearing your experience with this, if any.

LCHF doesn't mean you go high on protein, you just have a normal protein intake as you used to. The difference between LCHF and "normal" diet is that you cut out as many carbs as possible and eat fat instead. A common macro-nutrient breakdown is 5E% carbs, 15E% protein and 80E% fat. A general rule for protein is something like 1 gram of carbs per kilo normal body weight.

Are you drinking much water? Dehydration is extremely common in early stages of low carb. My urine went a horrific orange colour when I first started LCHF. Thankfully it cleared up immediately when I drank more water.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

I do drink water throughout the day and evening, but don't think I'm drinking enough - (before I started the LCHF diet, I easily ate fruit three times a day, which probably contributed to my water intake). I know I'm not drinking 2 quarts a day. I'm going to keep working on this.

I've read in the last few days that grams of protein intake should be body weight in kilograms x 1 or 1.2 or 1.5. Since I'm not an athlete, and only walk 1 - 2 miles every other day, I'll go with "1".

I weigh 70 kilograms (155 pounds), so 70 x 1 = 70 grams of protein a day. But not sure what's meant by "normal body weight". If I look at a BMI chart, I need to be at 66 kilograms (145 pounds) to be in the normal range, so 66 x 1 = 66 grams of protein a day.

I'm going to go through my journal this afternoon to estimate what my carb, fat, and protein intake has been for the last two weeks. Will post again when I have that figured out. :)

Totto, I forgot to ask...

What does "A common macro-nutrient breakdown is 5E% carbs, 15E% protein and 80E% fat." mean? I see that the numbers total to 100%. I'm not familiar with the what "macro-nutrient breakdown" or "E" means. (I don't live in the UK.)

Thanks!

I don't live in the UK either.

The breakdown is the amount of calories from the three different energy sources protein with around 4 calories per gram, carbs the same and fat 9 calories per gram. So if you estimate you need say 2400 calories in a day that means 30 grams of carbs, 90 grams of protein and 215 grams of fat.

Thanks for the explanation Totto. I'm sure I'll more questions after I've figured out my carb, fat, and protein intake for the last two weeks. :)

Well, in addition to frothy urine, I began to experience discomfort in the area of my right kidney. As luck would have it, the medical group I'm seen by has a walk in clinic evenings and weekends, so off I went to get a urinalysis. Nothing's wrong. Relieved. :)

I did a search, and bubbles (or froth) in the urine are quite common, and are most often due to dehydration or excess protein intake. It can also be a sign of a infection or more serious problems with the kldney. I found this article the most helpful in providing an overview of both...

What Causes Bubbles in Urine? http://www.md-health.com/Bubbles-In-Urine.html

Thanks for your responses. Off to ask more questions now. :)
