In these hot days my favourite breakfast is berries with full-fat natural yoghurt - even better, stewed rhubarb or gooseberries chilled overnight with natural yoghurt and/or a bit of cream. However, my Collins Gem Carb Counter says: "Fruits should be eaten after a meal high in protein, not as an in-between meal snack or for breakfast". But my rhubarb or gooseberry breakfast doesn't seem to put my levels up much, so why this advice? Should I be starting with something else first? (A nice glass of whiskey, for example? )

Hi Dobbs.

I too enjoy fruits for breakfast and even a mid-day meal. If it doesn't spike you and the readings are good go with it. i couldn't survive without my fruits and berries etc. I also watch out for high glycaemic fruits though. :D

Most of the fruit I eat has a certain amount of protein in them and my main protein intake is later in the day.

Start the day with a Whisky.....now there's a thought.

Hi Dobbs

People who have diabetes need to be make sure to have protein along with carbs to avoid blood sugar spikes. And a full fat yoghurt is best to have with your fruit.
Some diabetics feel ravenous a short time after eating a fruit or other carb, it wakes up their carb addiction, so full fat yoghurts/protein/fats helps avoid this, besides fruit is digested quicker and wont keep you full for long, adding protein will help avoid hunger pangs.

All the best

Karen

By eating your fruit with yoghurt, you are eating it with protein anyway.
