Why not make real ice cream? It is - basically - a frozen custard - real custard made with eggs and cream, heated gently over a pan of water until it thickens then allowed to cool before whipping and freezing. A small amount of alcohol and flavourings help to keep it from being crunchy.
My grandmother used to make ice cream for sale in Derbyshire, long ago now. It was called 'forget me not' and doctors used to recommend it for children who failed to thrive. There was a herd of prize winning Jersey cattle in the area to provide the cream and they had Rhode island Red hens - the almost spherical ruby coloured ones, to provide the eggs.
