I always used to have a few grapes or some chunks of melon mid morning on the couple of mornings I work. It seems both of those are quite high in sugar and being winter the red berries aren't about yet. Can you not have any of these higher sugar fruits or is it ok to eat them in moderation?

I really really miss fruit and am scared to go anywhere near most of it which is a shame. :(

The only certain way is to test before you eat the fruit then two hours later to see how it has affected you. The softer fruits are better. You can get blueberries, strawberries etc in the supermarkets.

Grapes are little sugar factories I'm afraid ! Melons as well. It is all down to portion sizes as well.

Mmmm, great shame that! We have apple, pear and plum trees in the garden but I am not keen on berries out of season in the supermarkets as they are often hard and sour or tasteless. Living in Somerset in season we get good fruit at local farm stalls.

Plums are the least carbs at 8g of carb approx each. Followed by pears at 15 g of carb then apples at 18 g of carb.( approx depends on weight)

I know someone who bought SA plums today which are very sweet and juicy although out of season here.

Ok will look out for some. I have been buying cherries but mega expensive right now. We have some frozen plums and I sometimes use them to make puddings but a rare treat.

I love grapes but have not bought any since being diabetic, I eat most fruits in small portions but I have a problem with grapes in that if I buy grapes it seems I can't control myself and will eat the whole bunch :?

Its all about self control, unfortunately when it comes to grapes I dont have any, I would love to eat just a small handful but know myself so well that I dont want to take the risk

I would have thought melon would be okay as it's quite low at only 4.2g carbs per 100g, just keep the portion small. 200g of melon would be less carbs than the average apple. Watermelon is higher in carbs than some of the other melons like cantaloupe and galia.

The other fruit (although it doesn't takes like fruit so much) which is very low in carbs is Avocado, but expensive unfortunately.

I stick to strawberries and raspberries when they are in season as they are quite kind to the BGs. Anything called "berry" is acceptable in reasonable quantities. Full cream also helps. :D

I love blueberries and strawberries too and eat them with my porridge most mornings, I also eat a banana every day (sometimes two) but usually have this as a desert after my lunch so is covered by my insulin.

I also buy blueberries from Tesco. Mine are the frozen ones, 350 grams in a box, buy 3 boxes for £5. I thaw a few in the microwave on a lowish setting until the juice starts to run (about 2 minutes) and serve them on one shredded wheat with soya milk, easiyo greek yoghurt and a sprinkle if cinnamon. The best breakfast ever - apart from a full fry-up!! :D :D

I bought some frozen blueberries last year from Asda, to be honest there not anywhere as nice as fresh and when defrosted they just turned to mush so haven't bought any since.

i have strawberrys rasberrys apples and pears. my mrs buys the kids good to eat pears and apples from asda which are smaller and normally weigh around 100g a apple and pear. i usually use 1g of weight to 1g of sugar so a 100g apple should be around 10g of carb with no spikes in blood sugars. however for some reason blueberrys spike me they are around 15g of sugar per 100g. the frozen fruit i tried but have found they spike me i guess the fruit was riper before freezing.

Thanks everybody, sorry for the lack of reply I have picked up some awful bug which is more like flu than a cold and have been in bed for nearly 4 days. Starting to feel a bit better today but have given it to Tim now, ooops.

I will see what fruit I can find when I shop later this week as I do miss having it. I can do portion control no worries, I don't have a problem breaking off a few grapes or only having a slither of melon.

As I usually walk the dogs in the morning I can't see any harm having some when I return.

We have our own apple and plum tree too, and I haven't got the willpower to give up eating their fruit. So, I've changed how I prune our apple tree. I used to remove a lot of the little ones after the June drop, but leave them now, and am glad to get smaller apples. I eat half an apple, and leave the rest for the next day. Slices are good used as bases for slices of cheese.
Supermarket berries are better mashed or whizzed with cream or custard. Raspberries are easy to grow and the slugs don't get them like they do strawberries. I've just planted 3 blackcurrant bushes and hope to freeze them as I do goosberries.
