Hi

I was recently told i was type 2 and for the last few days i have been getting itchy with a white'ish discharge down below  I was wondering if you could tell me whats the best way to treat this.

Thanks!! :)

Hi Nicola,
Sounds like thrush, the best way i find to treat it is with Canastin duo, its available over the chemist counter, but is expensive at around £12. It's a tablet and vaginal suppository or you can buy the cream that works just as well but takes a little longer to take effect. Or get a prescription from your Dr, though i find they tend to prescribe the cheapest option available and it can take up to 7 days for the treatment to work.
Hope i've been of some help and your sorted soon,
take care

Hi Nicola ,welcome to the forum.Quite often the cause of thrush is high blood sugars.Do you know what your blood sugar level is at the moment? Once you get some advice and get your sugar levels down the thrush should stop happening.

I'm not sure Nicola, one of the T2's may be able to answer that one. It's just something i was prone to, i use to get it around the time i had my period,(finally discovered it was a brand of tampon that bought it on!) i think it's sometimes bought on by a chemical inbalance, or sometimes taking antibiotics or as you have probably found new medication.

Well my levels are like a yo-yo at the moment. I shocked the doctors last week with a reading of 30.1  And the werdist thing was dat i felt fine in myself. My level now is 17.3

Hi Nicola

It's probably the high sugars that are causing the infection as yeast feeds off sugar.

Are you getting any help to control your sugars as those readings are quite high?

I'm on a tablet called Glucophage. I have 2 take it twice a day. Before my breakfast and before my main evening meal. The lowest reading was thursday just gone and it was 9.4 and that was after a 45min workout in the gym. So fare i've just been told 2 change my diet and excerise more. I'm back in the hospital 2moro 2 do a fitness level test and for the doc's 2 see how im takin 2 the medication.

Goodluck tomorrow Nicola,
let them have a record of your blood sugars and an idea of your recent diet and exercise. Hopefully they'l help you to lower your bs, and if there really nice they might even prescribe you something for your thrush.
Take care

Hi Nicola
I have had thrush now with my type 2 for over 2 years, I can't seem to get rid of it at all dispite having econazole and caneastan pessaries both weekly, gyno - daktarin and a steroid cream (to reduce the itching) and an anti histamine for the same. I am told it goes when you have good control!

I used to suffer from thrush regularly and then a friend from work who had the same problem was told by her gp to shower rather than have long soaks in baths with bubbly/soapy water as this could cause thrush. Since then I shower and just wash and rinse straightaway and have had no more problems.

High sugars do cause thrush and other fungal infections, I think Canesten works pretty well, but the infection will come back if the bg remains high, wash with plain water only, and eat a carton of a good bio yoghurt every day or kefir if you can get hold of it.

All the best

Karen

Hello, have you tried cranberry tablets, they are very large capsules, buy them in Boots, (often included in their 3 for 2 offers). I find they clear thrush, both kinds, very quickly, and I always take them now if I am given antibiotics. Yakult helps too. Hope you are better soon.

Men can get this too, you know. It can also infest the digestive tract (both ends).

Your BG is scary high, you really need more medication at least temporarily to bring it down.

Hopefully that will help make it less likely that the thrush returns after treatment - it may take several goes to get rid of it, fungal infections of all types like high BG.

Nicola
you must get that number down into the safe zone( under7) Thrush is definitely brought on by high BG. It's the sugar in the urine that stays on your "private" area ofter using the loo, which feeds the yeast.
Glucophage is Metformin and it can't get your BG down by much if you don't cut your carb intake. You either reduce carbs or change medication.

Well done Nicola! Once your sugar is under control you should find the thrush will go. I had it for 12 months not knowing I was diabetic. ..but once sugar was under control the thrush disappeared. Low carbing definitelty helped and regular exercise. Keep up the good work!
