Gad Antibodies

I tested positive for GAD antibodies. My doctor doesn't believe I have Type 1/LADA. Would there be another reason I would test positive for the antibodies? I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Lichen Planus, which are autoimmune conditions.

After I tested positive for GAD antibodies, my doctor switched my diagnosis from type 2 to type 1.
 
Are you also fairly slim and no obvious insulin resistance? How old are you? Having GAD anti-bodies is a very good indicator of T1 rather than T2 so I would ask the GP to refer you to the diabetes clinic.

I am overweight. I probably have some insulin resistance. I was diagnosed T2 over 3 years ago after losing some weight quite quickly and without effort. After the diagnosis I went low carb, lost more weight, through diet and exercise, and was told I had reversed my T2. This year my blood sugar has been creeping up a bit and my low/very low carb diet wasn't helping. Doc put me on Metformin and my blood sugars went even higher. That may have been a coincidence. I requested the anti GAD antibodies test, due to the other autoimmune conditions I have. The range was <5 and mine came back at 39. Along with low carb, I also eat gluten free to lower my thyroid antibodies. I am not sure if that affects the anti GAD antibodies. Doc put me on Janumet this week. It takes a month to see the full results. So far, it hasn't done much. I did have a lower fasting glucose this morning.

I also had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my daughter 8 years ago.
 
@catspyjamas you should see a specialist doctor.

I was also on Metformin initially. As soon as the GAD antibodies test came back positive, I was put on insulin that same day and told to discontinue Metformin.
