Hi I am looking for some advice. My 20 year old daughter is T1 and planning going to Australia for a year to work. Does anyone have any advice with regards to insurance, travelling with insulin and how much she would be to buy her insulin in Oz and how easy it is.

Get her to ask her consultant to get insulin passports - these are credit card sized with a picture of the insulin and a bar code that the pharmacies can scan so that she can get the right type of insulin. Depending on how the healthcare system works it can be really expensive to buy insulin (I paid €80 for one cartridge in Finland as it's an NHS style system so it's rare to have people buying insulin) - this information should be available online, worth having a google to see what is required in Oz/wherever she is travelling! Also worthwhile seeing if you can get more before she sets off so she has time to find somewhere to get insulin :)

Also - if blood sugar meters break down, worthwhile asking pharmacists if they have discontinued meters with sample strips as the strips are often the same as other meters but the discontinued ones they cannot sell at retail value so will give them to you for the purchase value which can be far cheaper!
