Now that Spring is here, the time is getting closer to being out and about in the garden and my exercise level will therefore be increasing. Because my bg level will obviously drop, I was wondering whether to decrease my morning Insulin before a few hours of gardening or keep topping up my levels with carbs. I'm on mixed Insulin and don't do LCHF. I have quite good control and I keep bg levels between 5-9. Your views would be most appreciated.

Hi June,

What mixed insulin are you on ?

My suggestion would be to have a biscuit break after an hour and check every hour, I find my bg drops fairly quickly with gardening so I take regular breaks to test, have had a few hypos whilst doing this so its a great exercise when running high to reduce levels but embarrassing when a neighbour drops by for a chat and I'm starting to hypo...!

Hi, I normally have a little less Insulin if I am going to be busy, especially in the garden. Personally, I never have snacks , ever, it shoots my BS up far to much, can't cope with it. But others are different, so my own regine works for me.
I did two hours gardening on Tuesday afternoon and I was 6.0 before dinner :)

Best wishes RRB :)

Hi Humalog Mix is not like bolus/basal so it might be better to eat a bit more carb at breakfast to deal with exercise 2hrs later or a bit more snack mid morning. But this is trial and error so just do what works for you really and learn as you go along

Using a mix you need to feed the insulin.

I think I'm going to have an hourly biscuit break. Having stabilised the bg levels on a mixed regime, I'm reluctant to change my Insulin units that I've tweaked in order to give me good bg results.

Probably best having additional snack on a twice daily fixed insulin June_C, I find gardening makes me extremely sensitive to insulin and can eat a fairly hefty carby breakfast/lunch and take little insulin in comparison, even then I can still get the odd hypo :(

I'm getting the hang of this. Had a carby lunch and then mowed the lawn. 2 hours after lunch, my bg was the same as before lunch. Mowing the lawn obviously equates to a drop of 2 mmol, which is how much my bg increases after lunch. Phew, this diabetes lark is a huge learning curve.:)

I'm the same. I'm on the porcine 30/70mix, it's certainly not as flexible as other insulins and having to remember to snack inbetween meals is a pain, but I've got my blood where I want it so I'm reluctant to change
