getting a pumppppppp!

i found out today i can have a pump once i've done DAFNE!!!!

i was expecting a huge fight to get my consultant to even think about it...

turns out my area has funding available so no waiting and he said their actually looking for people to have one!!!

so fingers crossed it'll happen soon...

im so happy and excited i had to share the news:O)

You'll find DAFNE very worthwhile, and fingers crossed that you soon get a pump and things will improve.

Fantastic news, it's such a positive step. One of the more interesting things to come out of yesterday's hoopla was the figures on diabetic pump allocation: USA 20%, UK 3%, we have a long way to go yet.

Congratulations i'm excited for you. I get hooked up to saline on thursday looking forward to it while a bit apprehansive. Took Horace (my pump) out with me today for trial, he stayed tucked in my bra, no problems! Enjoy the dafne course did mine a few years ago and still keep in contact with a few people off it.

whilst i was researching all the facts, pro's cons etc with pumps i came across the figures of the amount of people who have pumps and was shocked at how low the UK's figures were!!!

so when i get mine and others along the way its one more step to prove how good they can be and hopefully the figures will only get better for the UK!!


and good luck janrou for when your hooked up with insulin i hope it all goes good for you.. i was also thinking about it bing stashed in my bra... i will also have to think for a suitable name for my little pump too hehe!!

can sume one help me how do i get pump :( i do not like injeting my self i keep miss my injeting my self my suger in the 20 to 39 my doc`s will not give me wat can i do CAN SUM ONE HELP ME

I assume that you would be looking for a funded pump...

First step is to approach your diabetic clinic/consultant to see what they say, some clinics are more pump friendly than others...

In the main if you fit the criteria set out by NICE guideliens (remember that you don't have to fit all the criteria) then legally your PCT has to fund your pump... But you would have to have a consultant that gives the clinical decision that you meet the requirements, which of cause can be slightly more difficult to achieve, and even once you've got the consultant to agree, your PCT still could give you a very good run around indeed...

So I would suggest that give us some ideas (in another thread) to how your control is, problems that you may have etc then perhaps that we can help you build your case to approach your consultant with enough to get them to agree to your point of view..

Hi everyone!

I'm so excited as I got my pump last Friday and this morning I went live with real insulin. It's so great to finally have it. I know it's going to take a while for things to get sorted with basal rates, exercise and everything else, but I feel so much happier.

I was initially worried about where I'd put it/having it strapped on all the time, but as most other users have already said, it hasn't been a problem so far. I've been experimenting over the weekend and have successfully hidden it in my bra without anybody noticing.

Just thought I'd share with everyone!

P.S I've named him Humphrey, after much deliberation!
 
I've been accepted for funding, I've done Dafne, ad got my first pump appointment in two weeks! I feel really special and lucky to be getting one! Can anyone tell me what to expect to happen on this first appointment? Will I get to bring one home or is it jus a chat? Thanks
 
Different clincis will have different procedures to starting someone on the pump..

When I had my pump, I was started off in a group with 3 others, we had 3 days of training, 1 day of carb counting training (I had already done DAFNE) this was a month before we got the actual pump.. Then we had 2 days of training..

First day we got our pumps, and they went through the different canular sets available, and we choose which we wanted to try, by mid-morning we had gone through the basics of the pump, and the nurses had numbered crunshed our last 3 days of TDD to work out a starting basal rate and correction factors etc.. By mid-morning we were connected and using our pumps.. We continued training the rest of the day, sent home and returned the next..

Some clinics like to take a slower approach, by using saline instead of insulin for the 1st couple of days or a week... So that you can get used to wearing, changing canulars etc so you inject your insulin, then mirror with the pump using saline

If you'll worried in anyway, give your DNS a phone and ask what they have planned for you
 
Ooh there sounds like a lot to go through! I thought she might say which one do u like and then send me on my way ha ha! I guess I've got a lot more appointments to come then. Well it can't be 3 days of training. She said it'll be about an hour so I guess I'm not going to get very far on the first appointment then. I don't want to wait another month-it feels like forever when want something now doesn't it!
