Getting ill!!

Hi I'm quite new to this site. I've had T1D for 11 months now but this is the first time I've started to feel ill. My blood have been higher than normal over that last few days. I have the same lunch at work most days and normally goes from 5/6mmol before lunch to around 9/10mmol 2/3hours after. But today it went from 7mmol to 17mmol.

As it looks like I may be getting tonsillitis what do you guys recommend to keep my bloods under control and to get better as soon as possible? Should I increase my basal?

(Though my basal cartridge was cracked and I only noticed this yesterday which I why I though my blood glucose was higher than normal but today it's a new properly working cartridge!)

Thank you :)

Lol ! I was just about to tag you Jack :D

@Charlie Tudgay , it may be a combination of feeling ill and the cracked cartridge, depending on which basal insulin you are using. If it's Lantus, it's slower to correct so if you didn't get the right dose, you would stay higher than usual for longer. Well spotted !

@jack412 's links are good ones , follow the sick day rules whenever you are feeling unwell, and if you have any worries or doubts, phone your diabetic specialist nurse for advice . You do have ketone sticks on prescription ? If not , request some ASAP ;)

Hope you feel better soon, tonsillitis can be grim

Thank you. Yes I have blood ketone strips and it's still saying LO. My basal insulin is Levemir not sure how different it is from Lantus. Thank you the links are helpful.

When I've been ill I just gradually increase my Levemir each day using the meter to guide me. I also change the Bolus ratio a little. The meter is my guide

They work in much the same way, both are basal insulins, levemir nearly always has to be split-dosed as where with lantus some (like myself) can get away with one injection a day.

Your cracked insulin cartridge might be to blame for today's readings, just keep an eye on things and follow the Sick Day Rules if you do become unwell, it would be useful if you put your name down for a carb counting course such as DAFNE, they cover all this and much more. Good luck.
