Getting it right!

I have just attended an appointment with a cosmetic surgeon as Im looking to get surgery hopefully in the next 8 weeks. I have been told I need to get my blood levels stabilised within these 8 weeks before an anaesthatist will go near me. Ive been insulin dependent diabetic for 5 years and within these 5 years my diabetes has been very poorly controlled.

Im just looking for some advice on how to get myself on track and my levels stabilised. I have always had weight issues which resulted in me not taking my insulin to lose weight which obviously made me very ill.

I really want to prove that in these 8 weeks I can do this and therefore will hopefully get the surgery that I so desperately want and need!

I hope someone can give me advice as Im finding this very difficult even after 5 years to get my head around.

Thanks.

Others will be more knowledgeable than me, but it would help if you say what insulin you are on, how you adjust it, how often you test, and what your levels are like. Also are you in contact with a specialist doctor or nurse?

Hi there,

thanks for the reply.

Well, im on novorapid and levemir. Im supposed to take novorapid 3 times a day with meals and levemir at night. Im supposed to check my blood sugar levels 4 times a day.

Unfortunately, this hasnt been the case. For long time I didnt take my novorapid at all and would only take 20 units of levemir at night. When I was at my worst I took no insulin at all resulting in me being hospitalised a few times.

Lately, ive been gettin better at takin my novorapid but Im still not doing things the way i should but if I want this surgery ive got to get things right!

i was in touch with a really good diabetic nurse but didnt stay inn touch, i guess ive been in denial for so long and didnt like anything or anyone associated with diabetes. I plan on contacting this nurse tomorrow and hopefully ill get to see a dietician too as gaining weight through takin my insuling properly is a big issue with me.

Im not sure what kind of advice or help im looking to find on here, I guess I just need to speak to people who can maybe give me support or encouragement and in the end i could maybe help people too. I now have this 8 weeks goal that could lead to me getting my surgery so I know ive got to get myself in gear.

Do you know if i should have something like toast tonight since ive been taking a lot more insulin than usual today plus my levemir injection tonight? Incase I take a hypo through the night.

thanks.

Hi Kazzah :)

As a T2 who is not using insulin I am not able to give advice based on any experience, however I will throw in my two-penny-worth of observations!

First though, I am glad that you are getting to grips with things and getting everything back on track as this will make life so much sweeter for you.

My reading on various threads on here has led me to think that the amount of insulin you inject has to match the carbs you eat so I would have thought that if you are trying to get your weight down then you will be eating less carbs so that will mean less insulin. On the other hand I think that I am right in thinking that if you up the carbs you are eating to match the insulin then there will be a weight gain.
Having thrown that in hopefully it will provoke a T1 who knows better to come come along and sort this out - in case I have put the proverbial spanner in the works!!

8 weeks is perhaps hardly long enough to effect a big enough change but every little will help you. You would benefit from going on a DAFNE course so do ask your nurse to book you on to one asap.

I hope that everything goes well for you and will be watching out for your posts telling us how you are getting on. :D

Sorry this will be a double post I don't know how to copy and paste on this.

Contacting your nurse again is a great idea, a dietician could be helpful too.

There's lots of helpful info on this forum and lots of helpful people, so do stick around and post any questions you have.

Yes something like toast is a good idea if you are worried about hypos.

Yes less carbs means less insulin and vice versa. DAFNE would be a good idea if they do one the area, they don't where I live :(
8 weeks is probably long enough if you work hard, something that might help is recording what insulin doses you take and your blood sugar. Would recording what you eat be ok or would that not be helpful because it migth make you think about food more? Maybe ask the nurse about this?

The low carb forum might be worth a look, lots of ideas there for healthy things you can eat.
