Hi all,
I've recently been diagnosed T2 (3weeks ago)
My Hba1c was 87 and my finger tests have been around 18/19mmol. I'm on 3 tablets a day and changed my whole life style. Today I had my first hypo,(followed by another about 2 hours later) And omg it feels awful.
I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.
I know it takes balance but I just feel, I don't know. I was so proud of myself for seemingly getting my numbers more control. But then in one day I go from 18.1 to 5.1.
I dont really know what I'm asking for here, just feeling rubbish

Hi @Jo.liddle , welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you're having a pretty rough time at the moment!
Did you have a hypo confirmed with a fingerprick or did you feel awful and did it get better after eating something?
Asking because if your body is used to very high numbers, a level well above danger level can feel like a horrible hypo.

According to your profile you're on metformin only, is that correct? Usually people don't go hypo (below 3.5) on that.

What changes have you made to your lifestyle?
Are you still seeing numbers in the high teens and low fives on the same day? Can you find a pattern to when the high and low numbers happen in relation to what you have eaten?

Sorry for all the questions, but they might help in finding what works best for you!

Hi,
Yes I'm on metaformin only, 3 x a day. I started to feel funny and shaky so I tested and my reader was flashing hypo. So I had some food then after a bit felt better, then went back down again.
I've cut out all sugars and reduced carbs to a minimum, I'm checking all products and trying to change our existing meals to cut out carbs for myself but so that my family still have their meals. If that makes sense.
Today is the first day I've gone below 7. The last week I've been around 10.2-14.5.

What was the actual number?
Most meters say hypo as soon as you drop below 4, because that's the level where people on insulin should start treating as a hypo.
However, non diabetics can drop well into the threes without issue, or maybe they might feel a bit hangry or light headed at that point.

It's very normal to feel rubbish when you come from such high levels to more normal levels, looks like you're doing very well!
Your body will get used to healthy numbers again, it takes some time to adjust.

Well I think you have been doing really well and the way in which you have tackled this challenge and not letting it stop you trying to live your life is great. You will get a handle on this and it will be a catalyst to positive changes in life. Proud of you x

Hello and welcome @Jo.liddle

I completely agree with @Antje77 - as a fellow type 2 I can say that it is very unusual to go hypo on just Metformin but much less unusual to have a 'false hypo' when starting to cut down carbs.

I am a carbolic- never met a carb I didn't like :) When I went very low carb my body objected and I felt awful. I am now much better and today feeling awful as I ate more than 10 grams of carbs yesterday (along with some gluten so my body is seriously put out).

As a type 2 not on insulin we are fortunate in not having to be concerning about levels in the '5s' or even the '4s' . I feel a little annoyed on the '6s' and definitely aim for the '5s' or lower.

you are doing well but it can be a tough transition for some so keep persisting and know that eventually your body will appreciate it.

Good luck and congratulations for a great start.
