ive been diabetic for 27 years i want to turn over a new leaf and get back in control
over the last 12 years at least ive not done as the rules say im on 4 injections a day well to be truthfull one long acting at night and fast acting when i think i need it my a1 has never been below 13.2 i only tested when ill + took proper insulin ive got most of the long term issues but just live with them, feet issues feels like rinkled socks all the time and sharp pains, had laser 4 times now in my right eye lost the sight in it 4 month ago which is slowly coming back but can see black lines all of the time.
for the last 2 weeks ive tested every 2 hours + taken all my insulin :) i have done this in the past but give up when things dont inprove its been going fine untill the last 3 days my blood has not come down below 9.1 if its over 15. i take 4 units and no food or 8 units with food ive had 2 extra lots of novorapid today the last being at 4.30 8 units as my blood was 24.0 had one sasuage and chips then just tested and im 25.7  just away to test for ketones how long before things start to sort out or should i try to get a hold of my diabetic nurse im not ill just now just want to put some fat on and feel better know i should have done it years ago dont do lectures or what might happen if you dont look after your self jjust neen some wisdome and light at the end of the tunnel thanks for taking the time to read my issues. reading all your issues has helped over the last few weeks and made me laugh and cry dont want to put my closest thuough what some of you have gone thuough once more thankyou all keith.

You need to adjust your insulin based on what you eat, and what your blood sugar is, not just inject set amounts.

So for me (just an example, your ratios may need to be different), for correction doses, I would inject 1 unit of novorapid for every 3mmol/l I want to reduce. So if I want my blood sugar to be 6, but I do a blood test and it is 12, I would inject 2 units.

Sorry if this post makes little sense, I am very tired and falling asleep.

Your post has inspired me to go and check my blood sugar, for about only the 2nd time in 2 weeks.

Keith,

You urgently need to speak with your diabetes nurse and discuss your control, there is a course called DAFNE (dose adjustment for normal eating) which teaches patients the principles of carb counting and working out insulin ratio's, I suggest you ask your nurse about DAFNE and enroll on a course as soon as one is available.

Hi

First off, basics...it will be hard to put on weight with type 1 diabetes if your levels are running so high. You need to get these levels lower.

I really reccomend that you have a browse at the Bournemoth Diabetic Education Course...can't recall it's websit ename, but no doubt someone will come along who does.....this will give you an education as to counting carbs and more....you do need to ask for a carb counting course, but these can take a good while to come along, so this is better than nothing in the meantime.

I would aslo suggest buying a carb counting book to give you some guidelines, and especially to ask your DSN to give you some advice on how much fast acting insulin you should be giving i.e 1 unit for 10g of carb etc.

You seriously need some help to get your diabetes back on track, you will get some great advice here, but you really also need the help of your diabetic nurses and consultants. Explain exactly what you have felt and how you are feeling now, they wil lhave heard it previously-honestly you are not the only person that has been like this after a diagnosis of type 1. You can fix it, but you do need to be able to have confidence in changing your insulin doses for what you are eating and for illness etc.
