As I have a hospital appointment tomorrow. Following all my blood tests (and more) when I was diagnosed T2, they found I've got excess iron in my blood, a lot more then there should be. If it is what my gp believes it is, it can be quite serious if untreated leading to heart and liver damage. I believe the only treatment for it is to have blood taken out often. Really don't know how I've got too much iron in my blood, guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Nicola,

If it helps, a little over 5 years ago, I had tests that came back the same - high ferritin. Doc was puzzled but eventually referred me to a specialist who tested for hemochromatosis (a genetic test that I was told was quite expensive and they didn't normally do unless they were concerned). And yes, hemochromatosis if untreated can lead to liver cancer and other problems and treatment is as you describe (monthly, IIRC). The other possible cause of elevated ferritin, they said, would be a chronic inflammatory condition which they felt I didn't have.

Anyway, the test came back negative and the consultant scratched her head, said that perhaps I "was just the tallest boy in the class", told me I was discharged, and that was that.

I then got on with life and I hadn't thought about it for quite a while, until I saw your post just now, but I'm wondering if maybe I should enquire how the levels are now, at my next GP appointment.

Good luck tomorrow.

Let's hope you managed to obtain your blood tests results before any real damage was done then in that case, NicolaB70.

All the very best of good wishes to you.

2131tom, if you're becoming concerned, it certainly wouldn't go amiss to get yourself checked out with your doctor.
The least it could do is put your mind at rest.

All the very best of good wishes to you also.

Good luck both of you.

willie

Thank you to you both, Tom and Willie.
Tom, haemochromatosis is what my gp was thinking it could be, hence the referral to hospital today. He said it was a genetic thing but no one in my family have any iron problems. Will post later when I find out more. Good luck to you when you get checked again
Nicola
