Hi
My wife is a diabetic and as been for 44 years.
I studied diabetes when my wife first became a diabetic to learn how i could help her as i said in my introduction we always eat healthily but my wife as had many complication's ie amputation's and many more complications over the years never smoked or been a drinker.
We have since found it seam's to be in her genes ie hereditary.
Others members of her family in the past have had amputations due to diabetes and also we found out were none smokers.
Now i will ask this question can anybody tell me in plain every day speech what is GI diet i have read about it but i cant seem to get the hang of it i know certain food's digest quicker than others and some are long lasting what food's are right for her as i am prepared to learn.
I might have come across as i know it all it wasn't meant that way as i am always willing to learn and admit my fault's.
So please help me to understand the GI method.
I may come across a bit like i don't take any notice of what people say but the truth known i just think my wife is marvelous and if told she could do better i put my protected coat on a say she is doing her best so if you haven't read my introduction please read it you might see where i am coming from.
Please help if you can.

Kind regards John.

Hello John,
I think its lovely and quite understandable that you are trying to find ways to help your wife.
Hopefully you will be able to find some advice on here that helps her.

Basically lower gi carbohydrates are digested more slowly than others and therefore there should be less of a BG spike after eating.
look here: this is the 'official' website of the gi. http://www.glycemicindex.com/
the first page, the page 'about the gi' where it explains how the values are determined and the FAQs are good introductions

I find the gi very useful, though because we all differ in our responses to food, I use the tables as a tool in conjunction with testing my BS levels to find out the effect of that food on me. (rather than the average person)

You can buy a book The GI Diet by Rick Gallop, it explains it all in easy terms and lays out a diet plus it puts foods in a red, amber or green catagory. I found it simple to understand and follow.
