Hi a friend is having surgery and I would like to put a suitable hamper together for him but I am getting mixed messages as to what is ok to include, any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
We need more info. about your friend. I assume he is diabetic as you have chosen to put your enquiry here. But we can’t advise if you are putting food in the hamper without knowing what type of diabetes they have. Even then different diabetics use different diets for control.
May be it might be safer to make a hamper of toiletries, comfy slippers, magazines etc… rather than food?
Or if you want to get food, ask them what they'd like, they are likely to know what works for them, rather than some other random diabetic (of whichever type)
That’s a very broad question. Personally I’d steer clear of food stuffs. I agree with @Rachox & I’d go for toiletries, a nice hand sanitiser, cotton socks, tissues, hand cream, you can get a small fine blanket that you can roll up, a sleep mask & earplugs, maybe a small amount of loose change? Those are the things I was looking for when I was in hospital. Especially the ear plugs!
If you want to include food/treats in your hamper, it would help if you knew something about their food habits, diabetics are as different as non diabetics in their choices and preferences.
I personally would love treats and food much more than the things some other people suggest. I never use tissues, slippers, sanitiser, hand cream, toiletries apart from a bit of soap and toothpaste, or sleeping masks, a hamper with those things would be completely useless for me. My friends know I tend to avoid things with lots of carbs so they're more likely to bring me cheese or cured meats than a box of chocolates.
If you know your friend, you likely know what kind of things they like.
