Giving birth and induction

Hi I already have 4 children from before I was diagnosed type 1all were straight forward deliverys.

I realise birth will be different due to diabetes but I dread the thought of laying in bed unable to move for hours as I've always had active labours with the others .

Does anyone have any positive stories of birth with diabetes .

congratulations on your pregnancy. Bumping this up for you as my experience sounds like the one you don’t want - but was positive for me as baby was healthy and I survived!

Hello .. I had GD during pregnancy and had a smooth normal delivery however pain was induced to me at 38 weeks and three days. Baby is perfectly healthy and I use to eat quite a healthy meal. Intital weeks was on metformin and insulin. Later weeks was only on insulin. I am currently breastfeeding the baby. Only sad thing was my GD changed to type 2 in few days..

Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your baby, I hope it all goes smoothly for you.

My daughter had GD last year and was induced, but baby didn't want to come out, so she had a section and everything was fine.
I had my daughter 18 years ago and we are both doing well.
Take care

I wasn’t (diagnosed) diabetic at the time but was induced for one of mine. It was quite a long slow process as he really wanted to stay put. It included pessaries to soften the cervix, breaking of waters and finally a drip. I couldn’t use the birthing pool,as planned but it defiantly was still an active labour and I wasn’t bed bound at all. Congratulations and good luck for a straightforward and healthy pregnancy and birth

Hi

I am currently pregnant with my 3rd child 2nd since being type 1. I was induced with my son 5 years ago and i had a positive experience you will be hooked up to a machine for insulin and they will check ur blood sugars regularly i was still able to be up using the birthing ball and chnage positions etc obviously it is a bit more awkward as u are attached to a machine but i didnt find it to bad

Good luck x

I'm 37 weeks tomorrow and my gynecologist wants to have me induced next week at 38 weeks but I am seriously having doubts about it. This is my 2nd child, my 1st I had at 39+6 weeks, not induced but emergency CS. He's 6 years old now and doing very well. Apparently the guidelines have changed and it's recommended that all diabetic mums be induced (I live in Switzerland). My diabetes team has been very happy with my blood sugar levels throughout my pregnancy so far (I wear a Libre) and my specialist even said she doesn't see the need for me to be induced. Unfortunately my gynecologist does not agree. He said I should think about it till next week! So hard to have to think through this.

Tough choices when your medical advice conflicts with each other. Can your gynaecologist explain why YOU should be induced, as opposed to guidelines for the “standard” diabetic mum? Can he explain the pros and cons? Does he understand your levels and risks or just the generic ones? Can the two specialists consult with each other? Remember the choice ultimately is yours having got the best and well explained advice you can from both teams. Make sure you get that before you make that choice. Hugs and good luck.

Thank you, I agree 100% with everything you wrote! Every birth is different, every diabetic mum is different and we shouldn't all be considered "standard". That is what I believe.

Hi, congrats.

I'm awaiting induction date for my 8th baby... they will be active, they can attach a lead to baby's head once waters have broken which allows you to walk around and as baby's head comes down you know it by how much of the lead has lengthened lol.

It's come on a long way since my 1st induction 15yrs ago and have been having babies almost every other yr (yes I'm a regular and don't quite know why I do this to myself when I'm actually pregnant and feel like I'm falling apart).
I'm usually active and do it without pain relief. They will keep a close eye on your bgl during labour and afterwards and will also make sure baby's bgl are OK once they're born too (24hrs).

Wishing you all the best, if you need any extra help pm me and I will hopefully be able to give as much support as possible, I'm 35+5 weeks so may go quiet in a a couple of weeks time due to induction... FYI I love being induced

This I my concern too! I feel if the risks are merely generic “diabetic” ones then I’d rather go into labour naturally. At the moment no one seems to be able to tell me why I, specifically, need an induction!

I had gestational with both my pregnancies. The first was natural but I was made to stay on the bed with a monitor on. It’s told I needed to be Induced, but I refused, I was diet controlled and scans showed good presentation and size. They wrote it in the dairy anyways. Luckily I went in to labour on my due day. With my second pregnancy I wanted more control. With growth scans they’d predicted a bigger baby and as I was using insulin had booked me in for elective c section at 38 weeks. I had a much better experience with this birth. Far more control and choice in it all. Plus follow up care was far better.

It is your right to refuse this until they tell you why, you can refuse any medication that you feel is not necessary (the rat poison they make you inject is one that I refuse.) If you don't feel like that is something you agree with or understand why, then give them a call and tell them unless you get an explanation which is specific as to you and your current position then you won't be coming in... my 7th baby was supposed to be left until 40wks bc bgl was well controlled... Lil man decided to flip and keep flipping so had to be induced and kept in hospital bc he wouldn't stay head down... I wasn't induced bc of diabetes.
