Hello! First post and I have a 14 year old sis who has been recently diagnosed with Type 1 and although it's devastating, we're all trying to get used to it. Tonight I miscalculated her carbs and mistakenly gave her 11 more units of novorapid than necessary! This was almost 5 hours ago and since then I've checked her BG which was 5.1 three hours after eating which increased to 6.6 in an hour after I gave her two bananas to eat. I will be checking her BG in about 30 minutes but do I still have reason to be worried? I was told that novo only works for 3-4 hours in the body before it gets out of the system. She also took her long acting insulin like usual just before bed.
Dont Worry at 5 hours all the Novorapid is out of her system. ive done this a few times but never as much as 11 in excess. if you do this the easything to do is calculate what carbs you would have needed to cover the 11 units and have her eat them, that will counter the potential hypo long before it would happen
We all do things like this from time to time, the important thing is knowing how to deal with these 'hiccups' and you dealt with it really well - well done.
Thank you everyone, I was incredibly worried sick that I'd somehow made it even worse! What would you recommend to avoid making such mistakes in future?
