Gliclazide and saxagliptin

Hi, I've just been put on saxagliptin in addition to glic which I've taken for 22 years without incident. I took my first dose yesterday and by BG plummeted in the daytime but was up at 11 by bedtime. Nurse told me to take both at same time but I'm wondering if I would be best to take them at different times of day to spread the effect. No particular time of day recommended on either of the drug sites.

Hi. Gliclazide is normally taken shortly before a meal as it stimulates the pancreas over the next few hours. I have a split dose morning and evening but others may have once a day? The leaflet may help. I take Sitagliptin which is very similar to Saxagliptin i.e. same group that helps extend the length of time the pancreas produces insulin. Sitaglitpin is taken one a day at any time. You would need tor read the leaflet and look at your GPs prescription for your Saxagliptin. The Gliptins reduce spikes but don't cause hypos by themselves. My GP suggested I monitor my blood sugar when I started my Sitagliptin as I was also taking Gliclazide. If both drugs are working on the pancreas it is possible for the Glic to push you towards a hypo

Thanks for replying. I thought I would try glic in morning and saxagliptin later, haven't taken my blood since this morning when it was 11. Have just tested and horrified at a reading of 12. Just taken the saxagliptin and will test again in an hour, fingers crossed!
