Been type 2 for over 20 years and on lots of different meds. Been on Gliclazide since September going up in doses . Not bringing my overnight sugars down!! D nurse talking bout insulin now I’m not happy . And advise please

Your fasting (morning) BG is always the last to come down see the thread on the Dawn Phenomenon. As you can see in my signature there are lots of medication options. It's taken almost 10 years to find what works for my body, and at several points one of the DN's a my GP's was pushing for insulin. Now I have no objections to insulin, but as a type 2 if my body is resistant to insulin isn't putting more of it into my body defeating the object? I'm at a sustainable (for me) level of lowish carb and slowly losing weight. My most recent HbAc1 equivalent was 52. I almost fell off of my chair, and made the DN check her calculations 3 times before I believed her :) . Have you made use of the free Dexcom trial? Even just the 10 free one will give you an idea of where you are at

I hear you. I'm in a similar situation! My DN wants me to go on insulin :( I'm not happy about it. And yes seems to me 'a last resort.

Had my 2 week catch up with DN face to face talked about my numbers etc and about different types of insulin. Basically she said my poor pancreas is getting worn out from trying to produce insulin. If I went on insulin it hopefully wouldn’t be forever could be 6 or 12 months . I now have a FreeStyle Libre 2 system on my arm!! What a flipping game changer . No more pricking the fingers . Constant updates of blood sugars via my phone app and connected to surgery as well. Feel happier now than a long time ago. Another meet with DN in 2 weeks .

I have to go back tomorrow to see DN about how to take insulin. Start my first injection tomorrow! :( I'm hoping I can turn this around and it will balance me out. As really not in a good place with blood glucose currently. And I'll keep that in mind that hopefully it 'won't be forever'.

It is a bit daunting first time but after a week or so it becomes less so, more routine once you are used to doing it. Try not to worry you will understand after a week or two

I loved going on insulin (I was still diagnosed as a T2 at the time) because I could finally DO something to try and keep my numbers in range, low carb and gliclazide didn't do the trick.
I hope your experience will be as good as mine, good luck!

(And realise that finding the right dose is a process of trial and error, and slowly titrating up until you hit the spot. It won't be perfect right away.)

Insulin should work but it can be slow to build up to the full amount for you

Hi all, i actually started on Insulin last week.
Brief history - Diagnosed type 2 back in 2018, was put on metformin which progressed to metformin plus Glick and also Dapagliflozin, this lasted until mid 2025 (i was taking 12 tablets a day!) then i was switched to Mounjaro due to badly controlled BS. This worked wonders initially but over a few months it started to make me really ill, so i stopped it and went back on tablets.

Last Jan i had enough of my BS being high all the time, i changed surgeries, had another review and the DN started me on Insulin. I have had to increase my dose once (2 units every 2 days until acceptable levels) and so far my usual range is around 7.5, so it still needs to come down more. I am struggling with my diet though and keep eating things that cause my BS to spike and its frustrating because i don't prep enough. I have 2 autistic daughters at home so our house is always chaos!

I am back for a review next week, my libra 2 sensor is linked to my surgery as well so they see what i see!

Oh and for those interested, before mounjaro my hba1c was 115! Several months on Mounjaro lowered it to 44, it has since risen to 70.
