Hi All following diagnosis 3 weeks ago, ive changed lifestyle gone low carb, increased exercise to 1 hr intense at gym every day, dog getting walked more.
When diagnosised Doc put my on Glicazide 80mg bd immediately as i had an unhealed wound from surgery in December( havent seen much improvement in that as yet).
I had seen a good weight loss probably due to symptoms, But since commmencing on Glicazide this has slowed although diet and activity have changed.I have read that Glicazide can cause weight gain( fortunately i have not gained).
I go see Doctor on Thursday and i have a feeling he will change me to Metformin, My BS have mainly been in a good range and when they have been high im aware that i have eaten the wrong foods.

Is there a benefit of not being on Glicazide (i do need to lose more weight), and will Metformin help rather than hinder my efforts.
Or Am i barking up the wrong tree and should just sit back and wait for the changes which may be slower than i have expected.

Any advice welcome

Logically, yes, being on meds is not recommended.
But for some there is no alternative.
But you could be right that your doctor will change your meds.
If you can tolerate metformin, there is some benefits of having that drug.
Glicizide can cause other problems in which if your diet is not right, you could get and if you can be diet controlled, that's got to be better.
The more control through diet, does mean a better prognosis and a healthier life.
Of course, there is no quick remedy or cure. This is a long term condition in which the healthier you are the better.

Thank you for your post I'm aiming for the diet and exercise route but I think I will be on medication until the wound heals

I don't want to rain on your BBQ or anything, but I may just be taking a different approach to others.

I would say that your Doc may be reluctant at this stage to take you off Gliclazide. I hear what you say about your bloods being in "a good range", but you haven't shared what that means. The other factor is that Gliclazide acts by encouraging your body to secrete more insulin when you eat, so had a definite blood sugar lowering effect. So, in other words, your improved bloods will be in part due to your current meds. Again, without understanding what good is, I can't be utterly certain on that.

The other factor for me would be your wound which you state has not materially improved. I doubt your Doc will want to do anything that could impact on your bloods (i.e. a chance of them increasing), whilst you have an open wound. As an aside, I am assuming this wound is being monitored appropriately by your nurse or Doc?

So, apologies if that deflates you, but that would be how I could see it going.

Good luck with it all and I do hope that wound heals pronto!

Hi Mickeyb0703, Hope you get your medication sorted, just thought I would tell you I have been on Metformin 500mg 2 daily since Jan this year. I was on the standard ones and I had a few stomach problems bloated wind, and a bit of indigestion, after reading on here that I could ask my doc to change them for the SR ones [ slow release] I did after a couple of months now I am fine no problem with them and I have lost weight too. I do try and stick to the LCHF diet as well. Good luck.

Well been at docs today he was happy with my bloods and and has taken me off the Glicazide and commenced me on metformin 500 tid but I will titrate that up by taking 500 once daily for a week then add the 2nd one next week and the 3rd one the following week due to potential side effects......
Took the first one at 9.30 this morning and then travelled to London omg I have never felt so bloated windy and explosive trip to gents at London City only partially relieved.
Back at docs in 3 weeks no Glicazide today and I'm not sure of that medications half life but my bloods have been in the 5's all day
