After having two higher than average HbA1c results (7.1 and 7.2) my HCP added Gliclazide 80mg to my medications, after a couple of hypos and unsettled readings, i stopped taking them. I have decided to try a low carb diet ( I have probably learned more about nutriution in the last few weeks than in the last ten years !! ). I am having great sucess on my new low carb diet. (only 10 days in !! but now averaging 6.0 after last month averaging 7.8 ). My new belief was reinforced by the inclusion of a small jacket potato in last nights evening meal and then my next reading going upto 11.8 !, but my question is ... does anyone know if you can use Gliclazide as a ‘one off’ tablet say with a high carb meal to just help at that time ? ... i have emailed my pharmiscist but any additional ‘hands on’ experiences would be interesting !

I have used Gliclazide as a 'one off' in the past. Very effectively. This type of use was discussed fully with my Endo prior to doing it.

It was not used as an excuse to eat high carbs (I don't) but rather to attack high Bg's during anti-Cancer drug treatment. Some days I had to use it a couple of times, other days just the once and not every day. A useful tool but only ....as they say.....in moderation !

At what time did you take your 80mg Gliclazide ? with or before your meal ?

I was advised to take mine 20<>30 mins before my meals
I take my Metformin with the meal
and my Gliclazide 30min before my main meals (breakfast and evening meal )

I find this works well for me

You can cut your 80mg in half or ask for 2x40mg ( 80mg have a split line on the back)
then try and take 40mg ,,,30min before your two largest meals

If in doubt always ask your GP
