Hi, sorry, me again!..I have a quick question about gliclazide and finger prick testing. Yesterday I woke with 16.3 result. With a very low carb day and 2 lots of gliclazide, I went to bed on a 7.7.
This morning I woke with a 10.3 and ending the day on on 8.5. Does that seem about right, or am I doing something wrong. I'm on a last chance saloon so to speak, of my hba1c isn't improved in 3 months, I'm being referred. So I really want to get it right this time. Thanks (again!)

I forgot to add, I had a very low carb day today also, practically the same meals.

How long have you been on gliclizide? What were you levels like before starting it? Can you give us an example of your low carb day? Is this also new? Sometimes the answers become more apparent with a bit more detail.

Obviously the evening figures are better than the morning ones. Have you heard of dawn phenomenon? Morning readings are often high in cases of bad insulin resistanc, and if eating low carb often the highest of the day. They do improve with time and persistent dietary efforts to reduce levels. Do be aware gliclizide can cause hypos so once levels are getting lower and more normal keep a close eye and maybe get your dose reduced when that happens.

Oh and as to testing we usually recommend testing before and 2 hrs after meals. That shows you how you’re coping with your food. You want to be as close as possible to the first reading after 2 hrs, or within about 2mmol. The morning reading kind of just shows how insulin resistant you are or the overall position of your diabetes. Not sure what benefit a bedtime one is other than to make sure you’re not likely to hypo overnight. As I’m not on medication it would be pointless for me.

Hi, I've been having omelette, chicken and salad or tuna. I had some bacon and some very low carb sausage with no sugar etc. I've been on the gliclazide 80mg on and off for a while ( i stupidly haven't been dealing with my diabetes at all) but I'm on it twice a day now (last few days), on order of gp. They said to test morning and before bed but trying to test before food and 2 hrs after for my own information. I've just read I should be testing as soon as I wake. I've been testing about 10/15 mins after waking, once I've let the dogs into the garden and been to bathroom myself. Is that OK or not?

My levels have been very high.. usually 18+.. but I think the gliclazide is helping along with better food choices
