Gliclazide ?

Hi everyone. My last HbA1c test came back at 9.4% and I was on Metformin SR 500 mg twice a day. Last Thursday my nurse started me on Gliclazide 40 mg once a day (in addition to the Metformin) but my BG readings have not really come down, I was wondering if it takes a while for this drug to start working (i.e. Days, weeks or months even)

Hi i started on 40mg of Gliclazide it took about a week for my blood sugar to come down i am now on 40 mg twice a day and my sugars have stayed stable between 5 and 7
 
Hi. It should have an effect with a few days at most. People's reaction to dosage varies greatly depending on the state of your islet cells. Before I went onto insulin I had been on 320mg a day with no effect whereas others can go hypo on 80mg. How old are you and are you overweight?
 
40mg twice a day is still a low dose, so there is still somewhere for you to go. I was on 1000mg Metformin twice a day, and 80mg Gliclazide twice a day until recently. I have problems tolerating the Metformin so that had to be reduced to 500mg twice a day; HbA1C had risen to 7.2, so now I've started on Byetta and Glic has been halved while we see what effect its having.
 
Hi Nicholas. I would suspect you have insulin resistance rather than failing islet cells in which case the Glic may not have much effect anyway as the implication is that you would be producing insulin anyway (Glic prods the pancreas to produce more insulin). I'm guessing a bit of course. If you can reduce your carbs to, say, 150gm/day max you may be able to remove any excess weight and your sugars should also go down
 
I've also recently been put on Glic, started with 30mg per day, but had no effect, raised to 60mg, started to have an effect within a couple of days, but still get overnight spikes, so have been put Linagliptin, which doesn't to be doing anything. However, on the advice of others (including Andy12345) I have reduced my carb intake and eliminated starchy carbs completely from evening meals. Has made a big difference. Still get spike overnight but they have a lower starting point.
