Hi there

have just started to get rally bad hip pain in my one leg. I am off to see the doctor on Thursday and was just wondering if i being a t1 i am aloowed to take glucosamine sulphate as a supplemet as i took this years ago to help with another joint problem which it cleared up after a few months. This was well before being diagnosed as t1.

Many Thanks

Hi curleous
My T1 husband has been taking glucosamine for ages.
No problems with it

There are some side effects listed here including, allergy to shellfish, pregnancy, possible insulin resistance.

catherinecherub - I know what you mean but you made me smile just the same - pregnancy being a side effect of glucosamine! (Methinks it's bottles of white wine and romantic meals which have THAT side effect!).

Being serious for a mo', I tried glucosamine once but it didn't do me any good - bad knees - or harm for that matter.

Badly worded by me Alzibiff
It is contra-indicated for pregnant women.
I do worry about all supplements and vitamins being taken without people researching them as we tend to think that there are no risks in taking these products. Too much of anything is bad for us and will have consequences.

I too take Glucosamine daily. I started with hip pain, exacerbated by walking, which I do often. I found it to be very helpful and after talking to my pharmacist was also told that it can now be prescribed from the GP. This might be specific to my area but hey, you don't know unless you ask and what's to be lost by doing so? The advice from the pharmacist was to buy it myself, take it for 6 months and if I genuinely felt an improvement, go to the GP and ask for the script.

Thanks for the replies all much appreciated. I will have a chat with the doctor tomorrow and see what he says but am thinking i might start back on it after reading the responses here. I am a bit concerned that this has come on so soon after being diagnosed t1 and starting Lantus...?

Many Thanks

I think the timing of the hip pains and diagnosis might just be coincidental. I think age and previous lifestyle choices is a bigger factor (I too am of a similar age to yourself) If you ask a medical professional they'll always say that yes of course it's possible it's linked to your diabetes. Diabetes has so many long term problems connected to so many other aspects of the body it's hard to say whether or not some of them are directly related to or caused by it or not.

When I questioned why I was developing asthma at 35 they told me it's not unusual with having diabetes already. Similarly a recent diagnosis of Carpel Tunnel in both hands at wrist and elbow was also 'possibly' attributed to the diabetes. I am plagued with sore throats and ear infections again, 'probably' to do with my diabetes.
