Hi new to this. Can you please tell me if I need to seek advice re a fasting glucose level of 6.4?
I am not a diabetic that I know of. Many thanks.

hya,
it all depends,
if you are at all worried see your gp for proper testing,
let us know how u get on :D

I enquired as on your web site it mentions being pre-diabetic at those levels and you can delay the onset of diabetes. I do not want to go to my GP and be labeled paranoid. I try to stay away from hospitals and doctors  Thank you for your quick response.

A fasting blood glucose level can be affected by what you ate the previous evening, and also the time that you ate. Was the level taken first thing in the morning on waking ?

Thanks for reply. The last meal was at 5.30pm night before and I had chicken and veg. The fasting blood test at surgery was at 9am. Just a mouthful of water about 7am. I am on a low fat diet due to cholesterol. I have noticed on some postings about what you eat and when as to how it alters your levels. It is getting more and more complicated as I read more postings :?

What you had and the timing shouldn't really have made a great deal of difference to any result.

The level is only slightly raised for a non Diabetic, however you have to consider the body's own reaction to a fast.....what we call the Dawn Phenomenon. Everybody, Diabetic or not is subject to this. Basically when your blood glucose levels drop low as they would when fasting, then one of the bodies defence mechanisms 'kicks in' and elevates your Bg level to ensure that your brain has enough Glucose circulating. Hence a slightly higher AM reading.

If you are at all still concerned please discuss this result thoroughly with you GP. You are not being paranoid in looking after your health. If you are confused then please feel free to ask more questions here.

Thank you for your information. I suppose I would have to have several tests to get an overall picture. I do have a fasting test once a year due to the cholesterol as I have had mini strokes. I asked for a copy of my blood test results from reception and it came to light that a note said "make telephone appointment" along side the glucose test result and the doctor has not done so. I have assumed that it cannot be that bad or a concern to the GP, so I did some research and found your site.

Well I will worrry about that one after the christmas season. Thank you so much for your comments and best wishes for Christmas and a healthy New Year. :D
