Hi

I was diagnosed with type 2 about 15 months ago. I was prescribed Metformin 500mg until a few days ago and this has been increased 1000mg, 500mgs morning and evening. I have been feeling really ropey recently so I hope this will help me feel better soon.

Would it be worth getting a glucose meter? Policy of my GP practice is only supplied to Type 1 patients, I don't mind paying for one as long as it's not a fortune, so if it is worth buying one, what is the best one to get and on average how many times would you test on a daily basis.

Hope someone can help.

Hi dee

I am also T2 and my DN gave me a testing kit for free and sorted out my prescription for everything to go with it think I was one of the lucky ones
But they are worth every penny you can test your sugar and see how your body reacts to certain foods its quite eye opening so I would say yes buy one
As for testing it should be before each meal and two hours after each meal
Hope this helps
Good luck :-)

Its worth testing to see what foods do to you. The major suppliers of the likes of Bayer, Abbott Medisense, Life Scan, Accu Chek will supply a meter free. The problem is if you self fund the test strips as buying via a chemist they are around £25 for a pot of 50. You can approach the big suppliers to see if they will supply strips direct and at what price, I have seen posts that Abbott sell direct at just over £15 for 50.

Cheaper meter / strip options are the SD code free, supercheck2, and I think the nexusRX, though worth checking out what others think of them.
