Glucose meter

Jason.
Most meters are pretty much the same so other than does it fit in your pocket or do you like the look of it, how it operates it really is all down to personal choice.

I myself want a meter that is clear and easy to read, has a large memory, is not too big, that can show graphs and a large number of readings such as Bg levels, BP levels,Height/Weight, Ketones, Health visits, Food carbs/fats/protein, and other stuff. I got that from Lifescan with my OneTouch UltraEasy.....what I consider to be the 'Rolls Royce' of meters with free downloadable software. Allows me to print of grahps/charts and all kinds of facts and figures. They also gave me the smaller and less 'techy' UltraEasy' to keep in the car. Both take the same strips.

There are many meters which are shown here on the Community pages with some reviews.

Try phoning the manufacturers and 'remember' to tell them you test at least 4-5 times a day.......that should ensure you get a decent one free. All meters will tell you the basics.....just some are better than others. All have to be built to EC specification.

As for your Doc......he might let you have one. Many refuse to give them out or will deny you test strips. This is where the persuasion sets in.......tell them you want to be pro-active and you need to know how certain foods affect you etc etc .......

Hi

What to look for in a monitor...... well that depends on what you want it to do for you and how 'techie' you are.

I am a bit of a technophobe and use an acuchek compact, becaust it is easy for my simple brain to use. Others like the techno gizmos to upload to computers etc, it is up to you really, we all have our favourites.

As to whether your docotor will let you have one? again this is hit and miss, some do some don't, though most maunfacturerers will send you one if you ask nicely - if they think you will test often enough to make it worth their while, as they make their money on the test strips.

The bigger question really is whether you doctor will give you a prescription for your strips, some do, some don't, some ration, some don't. I get one box of strips every repeat prescription ie 51 strips every 2 months, some get more, some don't get any.

If your doctor won't give the strips then you may want to check the price of them and buy a monitor with cheaper strips
