Glucose Tolerance Test

It looks as though my Dad may have Type 2 too. He got called in after a blood test last week and told his bg was 6.9 and they want him back in for a glucose tolerance test for which he has to stay at the surgery for 2 hours in order to have.

I didn't have that test. Is it because he is borderline do you think? Can anyone explain what it involves? He's quite worried about it especially as it's something I didn't have. I keep trying to reassure him that it probably means there's a question over whether he is definitely diabetic and what treatment he might need whereas my bg was so high, after two tests, that there was no mistaking that I'm diabetic and need treatment.

They will be trying to ascertain if your Dad is diabetic or not. The test is to see how he reacts to the drink they will give him.
Basically they sit you a chair in a boring room  and take some blood. They then give you a sickly sweet drink, to drink as fast as possible.
Then you are left to read a magazine, watch TV (if there is one) and come back 2 hours later and take another blood sample.
This last blood sample will determine how well you are coping with the sugars in the drink.
The worse part of the test, is drinking the sugary drink
I would advise that your Dad takes a book or magazine/crossword puzzle with him, to keep him from getting bored
Not too sure if you can have Lucozade instead of the glucose drink. Maybe take a bottle along with you, it must certainly taste better than the glucose drink

Thanks Chris.

I'll reassure him because he is a bit edgy about it. He hates waiting around so I think that will be the hardest part for him!

Sharlie I had this done a few weeks ago, its just more of a sure fire way of checking the blood sugar from what I know. I had blood taken at 9am at the hospital then went back at 11am for some more, the drink isnt very nice but thats the worst part of it, oh and the big black bruise I had for 2 weeks afterwards

Sharlie I too had this test and it was as in previous posts. The good news for me was they downgraded me from diabetic to having pre diabetes. Still sticking with the diet though to try avoid an upgrade.
