Good afternoon everyone.

Hope you are all well.

I am going away camping for a week with my Guide unit, thefood will definitely not be low carb, could have asked our QM to do me low carb but didn't seem fair, im going to try and not completely crazy, however I was wondering do I carry on testing whilst I'm away? I have been in two minds, not necessarily sure I'm going to get much chance to as we're liable to be really busy, however feel I kind of ought to, as much to see what happens as anything else.

Thanks in advance

Hi @bluelybell

I can appreciate how you feel, but have you factored in how much the extra carbs may affect your energy levels, sleep and stamina?

My own experience is that introducing carbs on an active holiday led to a general apathy, floppiness and feebleness that well nigh wrecked the holiday. Although maybe I am more carb sensitive than you? And maybe I do lower carb than you? Both of which may mean that you make the transition back to carbs much more smoothly than I do. :)

Just in case, can I suggest that you take a few low carb snacks and things in your luggage. Nuts (if they are allowed), seed bars, dark chocolate. Even pork scratchings and pepperami will keep in a kit bag. That way if the meals are so carby that you can only eat a small portion, then you will have something more suitable to snack on later.

Actually, I am smiling, because my (30+ year old) memories of Guide Camp are one long round of biscuits, hot chocolate round the campfire, mashed potato, porridge, and - be still my heart - peanut butter sandwiches on white bread. All things strictly forbidden in the B-Parental home. I hadn't even tasted peanut butter til that camping trip. Happy memories.

I hope you have a GREAT time. :D

I would still do some testing, in the interests of science of course! :) I certainly wouldn't go overboard with it though, get stressed out, and spoil the trip. Maybe just fasting and bedtimes?

Enjoy!

Be first in the queue for cooked breakfast. Fill up on the fried eggs.
Last in the queue for toasted on the fire marshmallows sanwiched between chocolate digestives.
Have fun.

If you can get a safe way to pick a lot of fingers and enough test strips it could be a fun experimental opportunity teaching the Guides about how food effects BG...... (But decide what you will do if one of them has a reading over 20!)

LOL she could get arrested for child abuse. ;) Like the idea though.

The problem is you will need a clinical approved lancet, as the lancets that most of us use are not approved due to the possibility of cross transferring virus between people. Ask the guilds head office as I expect there is a badge that would cover it.

I went away on holiday where I knew food options were not going to be good - I did take my testing kit and I did do a fasting test each day - just a way to try and limit the impact as I find eating any carbs means I constantly want more and more - I did buy some nibbles that certainly did help - so I would say yes take your testing kit and do as other's have said and take some snacks that you can eat knowing you are not doing any harm and therefore help you to avoid going OTT on the carbs but do take on board it is a holiday and as such is not everyday.
Hope you have a great time.

I took Lidl rolls away with me to Spain and kept them in the fridge for up to 2 weeks although were rusk like by the end. If proper camping they should keep in the original bag for 4-5 days with no problem if kept coolish. Watch out for the squirrels. Have fun.
