Going back to Metformin

Anyone with Type 2 stopped taking insulin and returned to Metformin?
Can I ask how it affected you and were you able to remain on the tablets?
Many thanks.

Hiya hun

Im sure the lack of replies is not a reflection of you as an individual! I'm new here and found that you just have to wait for the right members with the right experience to see your post.

I'm afraid I can't offer any help or advice as I'm newly diagnosed type 1.

Perhaps if you explain in more detail why your swapping back to metformin, how long diagnosed, complications etc etc then more folks may be able to help? Just a thought and not a criticism.

Hope the change works for you and your feeling better soon xx

Don't worry, it's not because people are not taking any notice of you. Personally I only try to answer questions that I have some experience of or some knowledge of what the person is asking.

I should imagine that the number of people that have come off insulin and gone onto Metformin are very few and that is why you did not get an answer.

Thank you, both! As I have been concerned about my husband's decision to return to Metformin, I guess that I became rather stressed!!
Insulin was not agreeing with him in many ways.
He has now been on the pills again for a good few days and his BG readings are good and he feels fine so far. Metformin is giving him bad stomachs however. This always happened to a degree and we are hoping it will settle down.
He is also following a v ery good diet, so here's hoping! Thanks!

Hi, after my mum passed away I had to take over my dads diet. Within 3 months of a controlled diet he came off insulin. Mum never understood the diet and dad would never refuse her home baking! I was so pleased we managed this, 15 months on we might be going back on it. Dad has a meal delivered at lunch and he attends the day centre twice a week. All the meals have puddings, he also buys cakes from his day centre. No way would he eat like I do as he is 80, disabled and shuffling to his stair lift is the only exercise he gets.
I am on slow release metformin and although I have had bowel problems since birth i am fine.
Good luck

Julie, all the very best to you also!! That must be such a worry re your Dad! It was amazing that you managed to get him off the insulin after your mother sadly died. I guess that the temptation of cakes etc is just too much for him?!!
When my husband was in hospital with a kidney infection, his readings went sky high and this is when he was given insulin for the first time. Months later they still want him on it  In hospital he was given puddings etc too, that stopped when he came home!!
He is now on a strict diet and back on Metformin, his readings are great and he feels fine. I will continue to post occasionally here on this thread so that others may possibly see that it is possible to come off insulin (with their doctor's advice of course).
So far, so good though!

Just in case anyone in the future read this, I want to update. My husband has now been back on Metformin for over 2 weeks, he feels better and his readings are good.
Doctors kept telling us that this could not be achieved after having been on insulin!
