Going cold turkey!

Hi,

I’ve decided to go cold turkey on sweet things. I had my last chocolate on Monday morning. It’s early days but I’m having 2 weatabix for breakfast and 1 sandwich lunchtime. Last night I had a plate of wedges and mayonnaise. Tonight I’m just gonna have some mini spring rolls for tea. I’m stuck on ideas for a tea time?

Sometimes it can be really hard but the only way, well done on taking control and biting the bullet. You got this! You’ve taken the first big step. I know from your past posts how much chocolate you were eating so I can understand how difficult it is for you to take this step - but you have! :)

Huge respect to you Sarah. You have struggled for a long time, and trying is such a big step forwards.

I must admit I don't have a sweet tooth, and chocolate just isn't my thing, but put certain savoury things in front of me and my "Off" button goes AWOL and I want to hoover it all up. My OH's ability to do a little of what you fancy is incredible, but for so many, it's hard.

In terms of evening meals; how about cooked chicken as a basis. Either roast a whole cicken or portions, like legs or thighs. Dollop on some coleslaw or if you like mayo, that can work. If you can't face or have no time to roast the chicken, all the major supermarkets sell it ready cooked. Decent quality sausages?

Hopefully any pangs you have will fade quickly.

If you are taking any blood sugar lowering meds, just ensure you always have hypo treatments to hand.

Good luck!

I’m not sure of your reasons for this decision but is it really only actual sugar/sweet things you need to focus on or all things that become glucose in the body?

Usually we tell people it’s all carbs (except fibre) that matter for diabetes control. Whether that’s so you can count them to match medication (eg insulin) to the amount of carbs you choose to eat (as in type 1 mostly) or to make decisions about which food you eat and how much of them (in type 2 mostly) to manage the blood glucose via diet.

I say this because you list a lot of very carb heavy items, ie the weetabix, bread, potatoes and pastry that will cause glucose to rise and need to be managed one way or another.

ETA I’d also add I emphasise with the need to have all or nothing in terms of sweet stuff. I find moderation very difficult when I start and actually find if I have a trigger food not to have any of it at all.

I don’t know if this will help but when I started low carb I made a list of meals I could have and I’ve added to it since. I find an air fryer really useful for quickly cooking meat/sausages with minimum fuss, but of course they can be oven cooked as well. I often batch cook things like chicken legs or thighs, freeze individually and just take out what I want later. Also batch cook slow cooker meals in winter.

this is my current list.
