Going to Las Vegas

Arkefly

Hi there.

I'm going to Las Vegas for a week on Wednesday and I'm looking for some advice on the times of my injections and the time differences out there.

I am on Lantus and Novorapid insulin. I take the Lantus injection every morning around 9:30am. My flight is at 11:30am so this won't be a problem then. But I arrive in Las Vegas at 2:30pm the same day so I will be going quite a long time between my Lantus injections...

When in Las Vegas, shall I continues to do my Lantus injection at 9:30 Las Vegas time or try and work out the time difference and do it at 9:30am London time?

Thanks for the help!

I'm not a T1, but married to one
I would say, if the visit is to be fairly short, keep to your intervals, so you'll be back to normal when you get home.If your visit is to be long, I'd say shift your injections by an hour a day until you hit Las Vegas time. Do keep monitoring BG though.

I am not sure about your insulin timings Arkefly but I seem to remember reading about taking an interim basal dose and then carry on as usual with the new time zone, I'm sure someone will have the right info.

I really just wanted to say to remember to store your insulin in your hand luggage as if it goes in an unpressurised baggage hold it will freeze during the flight and become useless.

First thing to do it is figure out what time your normal does would be in LV.

At the moment the ime is offset by -7 hrs. So that means to continue the 24hr space, you'd have to take your insulin at 2.30 am. That isn't practical.

Ask your doc about splitting the dose for a day, so that you can get it and in 12 hr doses, have it in the afternoon rather than the morning.

If you do it at 9.30 LV time, you'd loose 7 hrs of medication, that's a lot. Talk to the doc/nurse about ways to deal with it, because we all have our own. It depends on when you sleep, are you going to be there for a while, etc.
Good luck !
