Ok, so there as probably been a few posts about this already but I'm going to post in any case.
I've been Diabetic now for 11 years and never really had it happen before these past couple of weeks. Whenever Ive gone to the gym my blood levels have always been at a good level (around about a low 7), but after my workout (about and hour and a half later) my level has shot up to around 14! Then it usually takes me the rest of the afternoon for it to settle back down but on a few mornings I'm waking up with a hypo. Is this just something I'm just going to have to put up with or is there a way round it? Any ideas?

Has anything changed in the last couple of weeks ? Illness, medication, weight gain/loss etc ?

Are you taking anything different before your exercise ? Exercise can cause BG levels to rise or lower depending on the intensity and duration of the exercise.

Here is an answer I posted a few weeks ago about this subject:

In most cases exercise will lower your Bg levels, which may show up several hours after exercising. So, the increase you had might have dropped later.

However, it can also have the opposite effect........raising Bg levels. This sometimes happens when Bg levels are high prior to exercise. It can also happen if you do some very strenuous activity, this can stimulate your liver to 'dump' extra glucose into your bloodstream due to the increase in Adrenaline in your body.

So depending on what you are doing exercise can make Bg levels go up.....or down. It is a balancing act really which by testing at various times you will see what effect different levels of activity have on YOUR body and Bg levels.

Shell,

Could it be that you are going hypo whilst exercising and you have had a liver dump which would elevate your bg. I would try testing your bg after 45 mins to determine what your levels are like, it could also be possible that your insulin is exhausted which could also cause post-exercise high.

When you exercise your muscle cells need extra glucose. The liver recognises that and releases extra glucose. But if you haven't got any insulin left in your blood the glucose can't get into the cells and just hangs around in your blood. But your liver notices there's still not enough glucose inside your muscle cells and responds by releasing even more glucose. Helpful... So your blood sugar goes up and you correct it. But your liver then has to replenish its glucose store, which can make you go hypo.

I always knew exercise was dangerous! :-)

anyway, maybe you could experiment with having a small snack, maybe with a bit of insulin depending on your blood sugar, either before or after exercise? I guess different things will work for different people. If you try to change anything, you might need to test more often and obviously bring hypo treatment everywhere.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies, they've all been helpful. I had never really thought about burning off the insulin or anything, I just presumed that your burning energy therefore your bloods are going to drop.
Think I might have a play around over the next few weeks and test whilst excercising to see when and where my bloods are starting to misbehave.
