My doctor has always recommended the low carb approach to my dieting, however, I feel ****** for several weeks when I am on the diet. Where am I going wrong?

What are you eating, and how much, and what does feeling ****** actually feel like?
You need to try to stick it out! Our bodies can react to this big change in diet - carbs can be addictive so we may need to go through a period of adjustment while we learn to rely more on fats and oils rather than carbs for energy. Take heed of @Indy51's advice regarding fluid and salt, and have a search on Google for Atkins/keto/low carb "flu" for further information.
