Hi
I have been a member for a few months but this is my first post and a brief history on my journey so far . I am a 47 year old male and i was diagnosed in early December with a HbA1c reading of 86 . I was put on metformin straight away and fortunately suffered no side effects unlike some poor people . I did a lot of research on this brilliant site and other resources on how to go about tackling this disease and bringing things under control.
My doctor was excellent with loads of advice and encouragement and also with a stark warning that if I carried on the same path I would be on insulin in six months. Our diabetes nurse was great , she enrolled me on a nutritional course which was also excellent. I was given a meter and i monitored my readings for a month for them to look at different trends in foods and times and exercise and what was happening . I cannot fault the care I am receiving from our NHS trust .
During the past four months I have adopted the low carb diet, cutting out all rice , pasta, bread and potatoes. I have exercised moderately , walking 5k 3x a week. I have dropped from 16st 9lb to 13st 12 lbs I am today .
My bloods were taken last week and I am booked into the doctors next week for my 3 monthly check results. I received a call at lunchtime today from my doctor with the news my reading is HbA1c 42 . She was amazed at how this had halved in such a short time and couldn't wait to tell me .
The point of my post is there is hope for anyone, the low carb diet and exercise has really proved to me that it is possible to get things under control. I hope this gives somebody encouragement who is feeling a bit lost as I was when first diagnosed.
Thanks all
