The Daily Fail reports today that GPs in one area are trialling a new service where diabetics send reports of their blood test results via email to their GP.

While I don't agree with email replacing a consultation (as outlined in the rest of the article) perhaps this signifies a positive thing for type 2s as they seem to be encouraging the idea of self-testing. Maybe type 2s will be able to get test strips if this idea goes ahead.

The Department of Health is carrying out a pilot of 6,000 patients with long-term illnesses such as heart failure and diabetes to see if they can monitor and treat their condition at home.

All have been given electronic devices to record blood pressure, heart rate, glucose levels and the measurements are sent to the surgery. The results of the trial, in Cornwall, Kent and East London, will be published in the spring.

One of the things the Mail article is concerned about is security. In the neigbouring dept to mine some T1s use a system called gluconet. They download the readings to a PDA, this is sent via a secure server to the patients file which can then be downloaded by the doctor at the hospital. The hospital doctor responds by SMS or voice mail. It seems to have worked well as they have continued and extended it. I assume a similar system could be used here

I had a superb GP who looked after me 'remotely' so to speak. It worked well.

I would email him on a weekly basis initially as to what my levels and bolus/basals were. He would recommend changes etc. He also used to email me all my hba1c's, cholesterols etc. He would also send me some encouraging comments etc.

We did this when one diabetic nurse at the hospital wanted to raise my lantus to 34 from 28 and another different diabetic nurse the next day wanted me to drop it to 6. I was beside myself, and spoke to my GP, and he and I worked through the problems together. I had an excellent excel spreadsheet that I devised that allowed me to give food and exercise details etc.

We moved, and so unfortunately I lost this excellent rapport, as the new GP's in this area would not entertain the idea of emailing.

My hospital here want me to download and send my bloodtests in through email using the reader that is supplied with the pump. I have no problem like this......when done like this nobody can cheat by lyinh about their bloodtests, as the pump readers do not allow for any 'false'readings.

There was a survey done a while back that said how many diabetics lied about their daily blood tests to their HCP's, it was a huge proportion.

Me, personally I would be all for it.

Lol....hell i cant even get repeat prescriptions filled via any online set up as my Gp's stuck in the stone age.And as for email consultations with my diabetic consultants i would LOVE it instead of faffing about on public transport getting there, waiting over an hour, then just him saying see you in six months ( which is always put back again and again so its usually 18months! ).

Ps lol bye the way this is coming from a type 1 diabetic of 36years lol!!!
