Great First Week

Well, after taking advice from some very helpful forum members I stumbled through my first week of low carbing. I'd tried for weeks to think of a menu but couldn't think of much and decided to play it by ear. I got weighed a week later _ last friday and wow , I'd lost 12 lbs in a week! My family couldn't believe how much fat I was adding to my food, in fact they in fact by the looks of horror on their faces I thought THEY were having heart attacks, lol. I have no idea if my bloods have come down because as a type 2 I'm not deemed suitable for a meter but I feel much better. Probably for the first time since diagnosis about 3 years ago I haven't had the weight of feeling hopeless about having diabetes on my shoulders, Anyway My advice to those thinking about it but not sure is to give it a go, I have to admit that a lot of the terms and figures used on this forum are a bit of a mystery to me but as I learn more I hope I can in turn help others too, but just thought I'd post my first result! Thanks again to everyone.

Thanks Sue, I was shocked I admit , Ive lost a stone in a month many a time (and put it back on ) but never this much in a week but that might be down to two things. I'm a big girl so I lose more than someone slimmer would and I was eating tons of stuff I shouldn't have been which I haven't touched so perhaps thats why. Im just hoping when I get on the scales this week I haven't stalled or put any on, lol

I've got a theory. I don't know of any real evidence to back this up except my own experince. I believe that the FIRST time you try lo-carbing is the most effective it can be. I've been in and out of ketosis so many times now it's ridiculous - but that first time gave such unbelievable results.

If you can maintain it, do! I've found t hat getting back into ketosis gets harder and harder as time goes by...

Hi Patch,
Yes, I 've read that so many times. The first time gives an excellent result that is never repeated again, weightloss will be lower and take months rather than weeks. I think because I was aware of that I've been rigourous wheras on a normal diet I'd be slipping a few treats in by now. I'm not sure what ketosis is but I know I've never lost weight like this before. If ketosis is safe then I'll definately try to keep on the very low carbs!

Ketosis is perfectly safe TMB. It's a normal metabolic state when you are burning fat for fuel. Anyone who suggests it's unsafe is confusing it with diabetic ketoacidosis. That is unsafe but is a condition where blood sugar levels are high and insulin levels very low so has nothing to do with a carb restricted diet.
Spectacular weight loss by the way!

Some of the initial loss may be water weight so don't be too upset if your weight loss slows down.

Brilliant job so far though!

After the initial 'big' loss.Losing 2 pounds a week is a good target to aim for. After losing about 2 stone it then slows down again and sometimes plateaus.Don't worry, just keep eating your low carb and it will go down.Sometimes losing weight slowly is the best answer. If you lose 1 pound a week for a year that is 3 stone 10 pounds. If I can lose that this year I will be down to where I want to be!

Yes I knew someone who lost a hundred pounds, ten pounds at a time <G>

I can't remember the record now, I think he went from about 450 lbs to 250 over a couple of years

Hi everyone,
No I won't expect too much. I know this big loss won't last. I lost another 9lbs last week but weighed myself today and have put on 1 lb, lol. I also notice a lot is written about stalling and it seems this can happen quite soon into low carbing with some people, so when that happens as disappointing as it will be I know from what I've read to just keep going . One guy said his stall lasted six months can you believe !

Boosh ...........Good on ya keep it going. ref the BS you really do need to know whats happening to your levels. Meters are cheap its the sticks that cost. I suplement my by getting some online.

On the weightloss i stalled several times on the way down until i found out that altering the ratio of Fats to Protein can help. The system can convert about 58% of Protien into Glucose which may mean that although you have low carb the protien is off setting. If that happens simply reduce the amount of Protien, It worked for me.

Good luck

Hi Sixfoot,
thanks for the info, I wouldn't have a problem with the meter, just the sticks. I don't know why they cost that much! I'll have a look on Ebay for now as I only see my nurse about once a year but I'm going to ask for strips too - I wont hold my breath, lol. I will keep that in mind re the protein. A lot of low carb sites say to keep eating exactly as you have been until the stall ends, but it makes more sense to adjust the ratios and avoid a long stall. Thanks for the tips.
