Hi, I'm a newbie. Paige, a somewhat awkward 17 yo student from Nottinghamshire. I'm a fairly newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic. My brief life with diabetes since just before Christmas has been hectic to say the least. It started with blood sugars of 28.0, keytones of 5.0 and a two night stay in a diabetic ward in which one of the patients who clearly had dementia and should have been on a specialist ward believed that the nurses wished to assassinate her. So not the most pleasant 48 hours of my life. So yeah I'm basically here to extort useful information out of you all and return the favour if i'm of any use :) x

I think I was the craziest in the ward when I was first diagnosed. Managed to rip the drip-feed out of my arm during the night, so they raised the railing on the side of my bed and tied my arm to it :playful:

Paige there is nothing awkward about you, you are perfectly normal. You have diabetes, so? Don't we all? :D

A common thing is that a lot of teens are underweight when diagnosed, so be prepared if you start putting meat back on, because it's rapid, it can be a shock to the system getting use to the 'new healthy you'
you can adjust your weight when you want to by carb intake, but that won't be for a while

I keep trying to answer you, but I keep deleting what I say

Paige, I don't answer young peoples posts usually because, well, I'm not young! I have no idea what it's like to be Type 1 diagnosed at such a young age. I do know that being diagnosed as a Type 2 when you're old can save your life!!
What I DO know, is that while you may feel that you are awkward, you really aren't. For every minute you feel that you don't belong there is someone spending an hour wondering how they can be part of your life. Diabetes is secondary to who you are, it doesn't define you, it doesn't make you who you are, you make you who you are :) embrace your life and whatever that may bring, be strong, be proud but above all, be Paige :)

went to see my doctor at the hospital today about my diabetes but hadnt managed to have my blood test so took my blood glucose tester for them to see. i was still a little worried as no matter how hard i try i wasnt getting my glucose count between 5-7 which is what my doctors diabetes nurse had said i needed it to be. you can imagine my confusion when he told me that my count which averages from 9-13 was fantastic he told me that this sort of count is what he would hope my glucose would stay at so asked him about the 5-7 and he told me he would not expect me to have a count below that but if I got into the low 5s then i need to worry sort of thing lol.Because my counts were always up in the double figures i thought i was doing something wrong. I just wish that my nurse at my Docs had fully explained that to me as my hospital Doctor said he would only expect a 5-7 count from someone without Diabetes. So PHEWWWWW all my worries are over lol

My count is now usually 5-7. Are you on medication?
