Hello all

I have been a T2 diabetic for coming up to three years. I was original diagnosed when at hospital for pre operation tests.

I have been through the usual system of seeing a dietician, seeing a district nurse and seeing a Professor specialising in diabetes. All through the NHS.

My last check up was December 2008, at the time my Professor was very happy with my results, I have a meter and strips that I use to check my levels occasionally. When I saw the professor last my bloods would be something like this:

5- 6 before breakfast
8-9 after breakfast

My bloods would then drop quite significantly sometimes as low as 2.5

At my appointment my Professor suggested coming off Gliclazide 80mg which has stopped my levels falling so much. My Professor also said that although my Diabetes is T2 I do show some signs (I don't have the specifics) of having T1. He also stated that I may "change" to T1 at some point.

After my midday meal my sugars would rise up to between 7-10 but then down between 5-6 before an evening meal, then rising again 7-10 after dinner.

I since last December I have been taking Metformin 500mg twice a day and Atorvastatin 40mg once per day.

Over the summer I kind of stopped testing myself , bad I know but I was in a new relationship enjoying the finer things of life.

When sorting out travel insurance I came across this website, and I have become more vigilant with my diabetes now checking my bloods but I feel that my diabetes may be “progressing”. I will obviously discuss this with my Professor at my next appointment in December.

Since I have started testing myself again I have found my sugars are higher than before My bloods first thing in the morning are between 7-9, this then means that after breakfast they are in double figures. They then drop by lunch time but rarely below 6, they then climb into double figures post lunch, a similar thing happens in the afternoon. I tried taking Gliclzide again but found that it does not seem to have the same effect as it once did. I have also been keeping a record in my snazzy new mobile phone which currently states that last weeks average gbloods were 10.6 and I have an estimated Hb1A1c of 7.5%.

Now that I have been reading this website it has made me a little paranoid, plus there is a wealth of knowledge on here. The impression I get is that something that work for one person do not for another,

I have recently decided to try a reducing my carb intake to a negligible amount but I think this is going to be very difficult as I do not have the broadest variety of tastes. This stems from an eating disorder when I was young that I have begun to overcome in the past ten years. I just feel that cutting carbs is going to reduce a very large proportion of my tastes.

I don’t smoke but do like a beer, I am probably overweight but I do not think immensely so (52 11in 14 stones) but obviously I need to get some more weight off.

I guess I have two reasons for writing this, one is any recommendations on low carb recipes, I really like my spicy food if that helps. But my main reason for writing this is I only have my Mother that is a diabetic that I know and for reasons I wont go into I cannot really talk to her about this, so I am looking at talking to people who have diabetes.

Sorry this is a bit long.

Darren

Hi Darren.
Welcome to the forum.

Two questions for you.....
When exactly do you test your Bg levels after your meals ?

What exactly is your daily diet consisting of ?

We may be able to make some suggestions to help you.

Hi Darren
Plenty of people here to talk to

Hi there to everyone

Thank you all so much for your quick responses, I have a busy weekend but will reply properly on Monday.

Thanks again

Hello all

Firstly apologies I have not replied when I said I would. Have been making a better effort to keep an eye on my levels, had my blood test today and will be visiting the specialist in a couple of weeks time.

Previously I have gone to the specialist and he has seemed all very happy with my results and I must confess that I have not recorded my results in the past.

What sort of HbA1c range should I be aiming for, and is there anything else I should be asking my specialist about, HDL LDL??????

Many thanks
