Greetings.

Just confirmed Type 2. Seeing nurse in two days. I also suffer from Fibromyalgia/CFS Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

My potassium levels are too low, my chloesterol level is low, been put on Metformin and Simvastatin along with Amatriptyline and another anti depressant. Seeing dietcian to work out what's the best diet for myself. I can't have milk, i have a sensible diet at the moment, small portions,
so i can't understand why my blood sugar levels are so high, and taking ages to come down.

I don't eat cakes, desserts, sweets etc etc. When i have rice/pasta etc I make sure portions are small. So i have to find the right balance, i'm not sure when i will be able to see the dietcian, I also cannot have a high fibre intake.

Maybe i'm not eating enough of the the right foods?

I think the nurse is letting me have a monitor to borrow so i can check how the meds are reacting etc etc.

Can anyone recommend a site on info about diet/potassium/carbs intake and what amounts i should be eating.?

Many thanks,
Cagsy x

Hi and welcome, can I ask why you are on statin if your cholesterol is low?

Hi. Yes, I was also about to ask about why the statin? The advice most of us would give is to keep the carbs down (not just sugar) and focus more on veg, proteins and fats. It sounds like you already have a good diet? Can I ask how old you are? If still quite young and not overweight then there is always the background possibility of the diagnosis being Late onset T1 (LADA) rather than T2. HCPs don't always spot this. Although the treatment approach is similar, further tablets will need to be added to control blood sugar

I questioned my doctor about it, he stated that i was at high risk of it rising, so basically it's to keep it at that level. High cholesterol runs in the family.

Sorry forgot to say i'm 49, little bit overweight but that's due to sitting around with a broken ankle, which has now healed very slowly, broke it in January this year, and leg boot came off last month.

Couldn't work out why i was extremely tired all the time, i thought it was down to constant pain and fibro. But doc run a test, had to go back for a Glucose test, after two hours my bloods were 22.4

My diet i think is well balanced, salads, carbs, protein etc etc, thou i think i could eat more veg.

Sometimes my levels go way to high when i'm in a stressful situation. They just shoot up, does this happen to anyone else? regarding high levels when stressed out?

Thanks for the welcome x

Carbs are the ones you need to reduce, bread, rice, pasta, potato etc. Veg that grows above ground are the ones to go for. A meter is advisable, test before meals and 2 hours after, that way you will know which food is affecting you. Statins I would knock on the head and do your research first.

Carbs are what it is all about, as been said. Relax and take a couple of weeks to get your head around it. Everyone throws a wobbly the first week

As has been said I wouldn't take statin for a maybe cholesterol either

You dr may have been dumbing it down instead of an hour talk with diagrams

I take statins because of other at risk factors including vascular inflammation
Some are better than others and arent in as high of a dose for cholesterol
So do some googling and talk to your dr again
Overall I have chosen statins

Hi, welcome. That sounds like the pharma company talking to me, let's medicate everyone just in case it happens. Your choice, you don't have to take them, but if your diet and exercise are keeping cholesterol low already, why on earth take them?

Yes, stress is a powerful influence on BG levels.

The LC veggie wasn't enough? Do I get the wrath of the statins are bigpharma conspiracy too?

I was purely asking out of interest as my GP wants me on statins, not to reduce cholesterol as such, but because of the anti-inflammatory benefits, yet no mention made of a CRP test and no evidence of any problems.

Sorry, I apologise. No I haven't had any tests other than cholesterol /lipids
I was 5.5 and now 2.7. I was going to stop them but on reading decided not to and reduced the dose
After reading on statins they are actually better for vascular than they are for cholesterol ( which I think is over stated)
Statins are good for your eyes, kidney, feet, heart etc for the small veins
I did this reading 6 months ago and have forgotten most of it
Have a google and do some reading

Statins help me with the inflammation stuff too. Been happily taking them for 10 years+ without side effects.

Hi, i remember the doctor saying about the cardiovascular, and that he thinks i'm at a greater risk, because of my mum and her sister and their mum too. So it's just a precaution.

Good news, I saw the diabetic nurse today, who issued me with a glucose monitor, and i will be getting my test strips too for the next three months.
Also i have been referred to the dietitian as I need to sort out a good balanced diet.
