being diabetic for 42 years is, well, quite encouraging to hear. :)
can you tell us more joyanna? what age were you when you were diagnosed? (but don't feel you have to give away your age in the process  ) and how have you managed it? How is your health these days, in general?

Thank you for your welcome , i was first diagnosed with my Diabetes at the age of 8yrs
Insulin Dependant then you had to boil the glass syringe then place in industrial spirit until
ready to use. yes things have changed for the better . with great control over the years i was never up or down , had my 2 Girls 25 & 30yrs ago with out any problems .
I had e - coli septicemia 2 yrs ago and since then have been a bit unbalanced , was at Diabetic clinic
yesterday and they have advised me to start taking Metformin as well as Insulin to help get my readings back to normal has anyone encountered this taking both at once :?: any views would be helpful .

Hi joyanna, great to hear of your experiences. I did a carb counting course (the local version of DAFNE) in January, and one of the participants on the course also had insulin resistance, had been taking increasingly large doses of insulin which was still not bringing the blood sugars down. She was started on metformin alongside insulin - I suppose it's the equivalent to a non-diabetic developing Type 2: the metformin will help your body to make the best use of the insulin you are supplying it. It's certainly not a failure to go onto additional medication, just a different method of treatment for a different purpose.

I would keep in close contact with your diabetes nurse specialist, as your insulin regime may well change significantly dependent on how effective the medication is.

You'll have to let us know how you go on - good luck!

Hi Joyanna

I was prescribed Metformin a few years ago to stablise my BM's also. It had a positive effect for me. I have since stopped taking it, as everytime I was admitted to hospital, the dr would take me off it and didn't restart, so I was never sure if I should take it or not.

I am now using an insulin pump and my HbA1c has gone from 10. something to 8.5 was my last reading. That was after 6weeks of pump therapy. I couldn't be happier.
